“It’s raining cats and dogs and Mom said it’s not safe outside.” 

Daniel caught a whiff of jealousy and sighed. He paced around the room several times before finally asking. “Dad, did you and Mom get a divorce?” 

“Do you even know what a divorce is?” 

Isaac squatted down. He hadn’t spent much time with Daniel, but now that he took a closer look and noticed Daniel was smarter than other kids his age. 

“Yeah, I know.” 

Daniel climbed onto the couch,, ‘Divorce means breaking up. It means you won’t live together anymore, won’t sleep in the same bed, and won’t take family portraits with me. 

The teacher said many people get divorced these days. We need to learn to deal with goodbyes.” 

“Your mom and I didn’t get a divorce, Isaac shook his head, “We’re just having some issues, so we’re taking a break.” 

He paused, “One day, I’ll bring her back” 

Daniel of course hoped his parents would always be together. That way, he’d always be a child with a mom. 

“Dad, I stopped Mom from making out with other men. You owe me a reward!” 

Daniel’s eyes sparkled with anticipation. 

“What reward do you want?” 

Isaac didn’t know much about Daniel. For the past five years, he’d been working most of the time and didn’t know what Daniel liked or disliked.

Isaac softened and scooped him up. Daniel immediately clung to his shirt, inhaling his scent deeply before breaking into a satisfied grin.

Brittany entered her office and was met by her assistant, “Ms. Dustin, someone’s here to see you*

“He said he’s an old friend.” 

The assistant shook her head, clearly clueless as to who he was.
