Charles' breath hitched. The look in his eyes darkened as he gazed at Evelyn. Across from them, Dahlia's teeth were nearly grinding to dust.

What a bitch...

"Who said you can sit down? Go make dinner already." Carmen's voice was cold and unyielding.

"Of course, Carmen." Evelyn slowly stood up, and before doing so, she released Charles' hand, her fingers trailing down his spine.

A tingling sensation spread through him, causing Charles' breath to hitch and his body to tense.

"Aunt Carmen, I'll go help too." Dahlia made a show of standing up.

Sena grabbed her. "Dahlia, there's no need for you to go. That's a servant's job. You're going to be the future Mrs. Jenkins. We can't have you doing such things, right, Charles?"

"Uh-huh." Charles' gaze unnoticeably followed Evelyn, his response distracted.

Evelyn had just reached the kitchen door when she heard Charles' words. She paused for a moment, then continued on.

"Dahlia, let me take you and Sandy for a walk in the garden." Sena took Dahlia and Sandy by the hand.

"Charles, coming?" Dahlia asked.

"I've got things to handle." He stood and walked upstairs.

...

Carmen deliberately made things difficult for Evelyn. She sent all the kitchen staff away on various errands, leaving Evelyn alone.

Evelyn was prepared. It wasn’t her first time.

Before, she was willing to serve the whole family for Charles' sake.

But now, things changed. If they made her cook, they'd better prepare to eat it.
