Chapter 6 novel The Day Our Promise Breaks (Charles and Evelyn)

Words laden with unspoken intentions carried a tint of sensuality. Evelyn couldn't help but feel a blush creeping up to her earlobes.

Charles watched Evelyn's shy demeanor, and his eyes darkened. A turmoil was brewing within.

Feeling his gaze, Evelyn clenched her fists tightly, her voice cold and firm. “Charles, we've broken up.”

The implication was clear. He had crossed a line.

Having said that, Evelyn turned around and hurried upstairs.

Charles watched her retreating figure and leaned against his car. His gaze was murky and unreadable.

...

Evelyn opened the door and was about to close it when a large hand stopped her. Charles had followed her upstairs.

Without giving Evelyn time to react, he forcefully pushed the door open, stepped inside, and opened the exquisite gift box in his hand. “Charlie, look what Daddy has brought you.”

Silence filled the room. There’s no response.

Charles paused, a hint of confusion on his face.

Although Charlie didn't throw herself into his arms for cuddles like Sandy did, she would always rush over at the sound of his voice. She would look up at him with adoring eyes and softly call out, “Daddy.”

“Hasn't Charlie woken up yet? I'll go wake her.”

Charles lowered his voice, placed the gift box on the coffee table, and headed to the bedroom.

What he found was not surprising. The bed was neatly made, and Charlie was not there.

His gaze swept around. He didn’t find anyone in the room but noticed Charlie’s clothes hung next to Evelyn’s in the half-open wardrobe.

“Where’s Charlie?” Charles stepped out of the bedroom, looking towards Evelyn.

Charles couldn’t stop her in time and watched as the box fell to the floor. The dress he had specially made for Charlie fell out and landed on an unextinguished cigarette butt, burning a large hole in it.

“Evelyn, have you had enough?!” Charles’ eyes were filled with anger, his brows furrowed, and a storm was brewing in his gaze.

“Just leave.” Evelyn ignored Charles' anger and coldly ordered him to leave.

Charles’ expression was terrifyingly cold. As the atmosphere was about to freeze over, his phone rang. It was Dahlia calling.

Charles glanced at Evelyn, and answered the phone in front of her. “Dahlia.” His tone was gentle, but his gaze towards Evelyn was cold.

Dahlia asked softly, “Did you pick up Charlie? Disney just called me to ask when you and Charlie would arrive so they could prepare in advance.”

“No, Charlie isn’t here.” Charles’ gaze remained on Evelyn.

Watching her still feigning indifference, his gaze grew colder. “Cancel the Disney plans. I’m coming to be with you and Sandy now.”
