“Amy,” he stammered, “I messed up. It was all my fault. I shouldn’t have…I

ended things with Bethany. I made her get rid of the baby. Please, just forgive me.

I’ll do anything. Just don’t leave me.”

His voice was thick with desperation, but Amelia remained calm. She gave a

soft, almost gentle laugh.“Okay. I forgive you.”

The unexpected answer stunned him.“Really?” He was too relieved to

question the sincerity in her voice.

“Yes,” she said, a chilling calmness in her voice. “Isn’t that what you wanted to

hear? I forgive you. Let’s forget about it. Are you happy now?” She could offer him forgiveness, empty words that meant nothing. But reconciliation? Never. A

shattered mirror couldn’t be put back together.

She hung up

before he could respond. She’d told him once that if she

stopped loving him, he could kill himself and she wouldn’t care. He’d forgotten.
