Matthew looked at Karen with much suspicion. He couldn't tell if she was lying or if she really didn't know anything, but it didn't matter because he wasn't going to leave without meeting David.

"You're right. You might not know what's up, so I'll wait for your dad to return," Matthew said.

Upon hearing that, Karen asked hesitantly, "Why don't you come and wait inside?"

Matthew saw through her doubts and smiled as he said, "I can just wait outside if you feel troubled by it."

It was normal for her to have her guard up because Matthew was merely a stranger, and he understood that as well.

Karen felt a little embarrassed when he aired out her thoughts, so she said, "I'm not worried about that. Besides, you don't seem like that sort of person, so come in and have a seat."

Hence, Matthew followed her into the house. There were cracks in the cemented ground because of how worn out it was, and there was not a single couch in sight—there was nowhere to even take a seat.

Karen then walked toward one of the bedrooms, but she stopped and turned to look at Matthew when his shuffling footsteps came to a halt. "Come on in!"

Matthew was a little hesitant, but he still followed her into the room. There was a big and spotlessly clean heated platform in the room. Karen was busy arranging a small table on top of it.

Seeing how Karen busied herself, Matthew felt as if he had returned ten years in time. It was a common tradition for people to entertain their guests on heated platforms because every household had one back then.

These days, the living standards had turned for the better, so it was rare to see people entertaining their guests on heated platforms. They would usually settle for a couch and coffee table placed in their living room to entertain their guests.

Unless their relatives or close friends came over for the winter, they wouldn't let them use the heated platforms.

Karen poured a cup of coffee for Matthew and placed it on the small table. Seeing how Matthew had yet to sit on the heated platform, she said apologetically, "There's nothing much at home, but I hope it doesn't bother you too much."

Matthew smiled and replied, "It's enough that you made me a cup of coffee."

David was a man who looked to be around 40 or 50 years of age. He had an unkempt beard, messy hair, and was donned in a tactical attire, which Matthew could tell was for his work.

David was quite stunned when he saw Matthew, but he quickly greeted him enthusiastically, "You… You must be Karen's boyfriend. Make yourself comfortable, alright? I'll go and get some fruits for you since there's nothing much at home."

Matthew knew that David had misunderstood the purpose of his visit, so he said, "I'm here to see you."

David smiled and said, "I don't request much of you—just that you take care of my daughter and be nice to her. I won't live with you after you're both married as well, and you won't have to clear off the debts we have. I'll take care of it myself!"

Just as Matthew was about to clear up the misunderstanding, Karen stepped in and said, "Dad, I've already said that I'm not looking for anyone right now. He's not my boyfriend either, and he's here for you!"

David was a little surprised and asked in confusion, "What does he want me for? I don't even know him!"

At that, Matthew smiled and said, "I'm here to buy the stone tablet from Graceful Touch Church."
