For Don's a real whiz at getting things done and broad connections, in no time, he scoped out a match for Brandon.
He went the extra mile and printed out the potential match's info, making a personal delivery to Brandon's office.
"Found you a date, buddy - the daughter of my mom's friend. She's a catch - good-looking and all. Just a bit picky, which is why she's still single. Now her mom's on her case to tie the knot, so she's looking to settle, just to get her off her back. She's a good match for you."
As he spoke, Don tossed the dossier onto Brandon's desk.
Without even glancing at it, Brandon, focused on his computer, said, "I can only spare an hour to meet her. If she's cool with that, set it up. Somewhere close to the office would be best."
Don chuckled, "Are you looking to get hitched or make a business deal here?"
Brandon replied, "Is there a difference?"
Don nodded, "Alright, I'll sort it out. As long as she doesn't mind."
He wouldn't be pushing this if she wasn't eager to meet.
Just then, Brandon's phone rang, a call from Sophia's mentor, Zachary. He answered.
Zachary wanted to invite him to the ribbon-cutting of his son's new company. His son, Alex Gardner, was launching a building materials company that Saturday. They needed some big shots to beef up the event.
Brandon's Starlight Group, though diversified, was a heavy hitter in real estate and hospitality.
Brandon had a good impression of Zachary's son Alex - hardworking and humble. Despite his father being a renowned architect and professor, Alex wasn't just riding his dad's coattails; he was grinding it out on his own.
"Sure, I'll be there Saturday," Brandon readily agreed to Zachary's request.
"Zachary?" Don asked uncertainly after the call.
He'd caught a glimpse of the name "Zachary" during the call and wondered if it was the same Zachary he looked up to.
"Yep," Brandon confirmed, "the one you admire."
“Sophia?” Don flicked an uncertain glance at Brandon. Was Zachary talking about that Sophia he knew about?
Brandon nodded slightly, “Mr. Gardner is Sophia’s mentor.”
The news made Don agape. He really didn’t know that, for aside from working, Sophia barely mentioned any personal stuff. However, as he thought it over, not even having realized Sophia was Brandon’s wife, it’d be only normal that he had no idea of her college mentor.
Zachary continued with a smile, “Yes, it’s Sophia. She's been singing your praises - saying how talented you are, how you respect your staff, give designers their creative space, and your kindness and humor, etc. I've been meaning to ask her to introduce us, but thanks to Brandon, I'm lucky to meet you today."
Don, a bit embarrassed by the praise, replied, "Mr. Gardner, you're too kind. It's Sophia who's talented. And of course, it's due to your excellent teaching that we've got such talent on our team."
Zachary's wife, Jolin Gardner, chimed in with a laugh, "Alright, no more modesty; you're both great. Let's head inside. Sophia's here today too; you can all sit down and chat."
At the mention of "Sophia's also here", Brandon's expression flickered, but he didn't look up to the guests.
Sophia, with Zachary's granddaughter Serena, and Ivan, stepped out of the house. The little girl, having dragged Sophia out to look for her grandparents, spotted them in the yard and called out, "Grandpa, Grandma."
