"Just now, the cement block upstairs wasn't secured properly and came crashing down. I was so busy trying to help people; I couldn't even think about answering my phone."

Brandon said this, his eyes scanning the chaotic cement floor, as if searching for something. Sophia, almost instinctively, followed his gaze to the ground.

Among the rubble, she spotted a black smartphone.

The construction foreman nearby noticed it too, bent down, picked it up, and handed it to Brandon, "Is this your phone?"

"Yeah."

Brandon reached out to take it.

"Thanks," he said politely, glancing at the phone, which was smashed and powered off.

The foreman looked at Brandon's busted phone and clapped him on the shoulder, "No need for thanks; it's us who should be thanking you. If it weren't for you, we could've had a fatality on our hands."

Sophia couldn't help but glimpse at him.

From his reaction, it was clear he didn't know Brandon and just assumed he was a passerby.

Brandon didn't seem to want to reveal his identity and just looked at the damaged phone in his hand before turning back to the spot where the block had fallen, not saying a word.

The foreman was also concerned about his arm.

Brandon had just been passing by when the block fell, and no one had noticed because they were all busy below.

After shouting "Watch out!" he had lunged toward the workers in the path of the falling block, narrowly pushing him to safety and saving two lives.

However, a worker who was slightly out of the way couldn't dodge in time and was hit on the head by the flying chunks of cement, suffering a minor injury.

The two men Brandon had pushed away also ended up hitting the cement floor because of the force, and they needed to go to the hospital for a checkup as well.

The foreman guessed Brandon was more than just scraped up at the elbow.

He saw that all the injured had been taken by ambulance and couldn't help but worry about Brandon, "You should go get checked at the hospital too. Don't worry; we'll cover your medical expenses."

"No need, thanks." Brandon declined, nodding towards the ambulance, "Take them to the hospital first."

His voice was low, but it carried an authoritative tone. The foreman instinctively followed his directive, arranging for two workers to accompany the injured in the ambulance.

Sophia looked at Brandon's arm with concern. His left palm was still wrapped in gauze, clearly from the injury he'd sustained crushing a glass the day before.

Now his right arm was injured too, with a large patch of skin scraped off at the elbow, and she suspected he might have also hurt a bone.

When he had reached for the phone, Sophia had distinctly noticed a furrow in his brow, a sign that the injury was more than just a superficial scrape.

"You should go to the hospital too." Sophia hesitated before speaking up, "Check if there’s a fracture."

The foreman nodded in agreement, "Yeah, you should definitely get an X-ray."

Brandon looked at Sophia and nodded.

"I'll take you there," said the foreman, turning to organize the site's affairs.

"Not necessary." Brandon stopped him, looking at Sophia, "You go with me."

Leaving the hospital and seeing the darkening sky, Sophia wanted to say goodbye to Brandon, but considering both his hands were injured, she couldn't bring herself to do so, especially since he hadn't had dinner yet and there was no one at home to take care of him.

Brandon didn't suggest she should leave either. He quietly gave the driver his home address and then turned to Sophia, who was hesitating.

"Let's go."

Sophia remembered how attentively Brandon had taken care of her during her hospital stay, and she couldn't just turn her back on him now. After a moment's hesitation, she followed him into the car.

Brandon was heading back to the place he was currently living in.

Sophia had been there once before, when she had come back to the country to visit her dad Haley last time and Brandon had forcefully taken her there.

The house looked the same as before, just as spacious, clean, and tidy, but also just as cold and lifeless. It was clear that Brandon, like before, didn't spend much time at home.

"So, you're living here now?"

Sophia asked cautiously as she surveyed the immaculate living room.

"Yeah."

Brandon responded lightly, taking the medicine from her and placing it on the dining table, then turned to her, "What do you want for dinner?"

Sophia, realizing he was offering to arrange dinner for her, quickly said, "You rest with your injured hand. What would you like for dinner? I can order some takeout for you."

"I don't eat takeout," Brandon stated.
