Sophia wasn't sure if Brandon's comment was loaded with hidden meaning or just off the cuff.
His eyes were cold and sharp at the moment, like a blade, laying bare all her thoughts with nowhere to hide.
"Goodness, it's getting late." Under his piercing gaze, her response came out involuntarily soft, "I want to head home early."
"A loner's home, does it really make a difference if you head back early or late?"
"Or is it," He looked straight at her, "that you're not the only one at home?"
Sophia kept silent.
"Is it not a home if one lives alone?" She met his gaze squarely, flipping his accusation back at him, "You might not treat your place as a home, but I do. I just love being at my own place."
That sure hit a nerve with him.
She saw his lips purse slightly, but his gaze remained icy and penetrating. "Sophia, you do realize you're dodging the question, right?"
Sophia pursed her lips, feeling a mix of frustration and reluctance.
Whenever Brandon got serious, she didn't stand a chance.
But Brandon didn't pursue the topic further.
"Let's head up."
After saying that, he turned and hit the elevator button.
The elevator doors opened.
Brandon looked back at her.
Sophia hesitated and glanced at him without moving.
Brandon didn't rush her, just stood there coolly and confidently waiting.
Sophia had no choice but to speak up. "I don't want to go up."
Her voice was soft, her head down, not looking at him.
She didn't understand why Brandon, normally cosy and close, had suddenly flipped out. She was a bit scared to face such an unpredictable Brandon, especially when it was just the two of them.
Brandon watched her. "Is it that you don't want to, or that you're scared?"
His voice was calm and detached.
Sophia bit her lip. "Scared."
"If you haven't done anything wrong, what's there to fear? Or is it that you've done something to wrong me, something you're afraid to face?"
Sophia looked up at him briefly; every word from Brandon tonight seemed to have a double meaning.
"Brandon, stop sidestepping." She threw his earlier words back at him, "It's not my first day being scared of you, nor am I the first one. Shouldn't you be looking at yourself for the reason?"
Brandon went to open the door.
As the door swung open, Sophia walked in and sat down on the couch by herself.
Brandon glanced at her, headed to the fridge, got out some milk, poured it into a cup, heated it in the microwave, then brought it over and set it in front of her.
"Have something to drink first."
He said, then sat down next to her on the couch.
"Thanks."
Sophia murmured a thank you, her voice a bit hoarse.
Brandon turned to look at her.
Sophia was sipping on the milk, cupping it with both hands, taking small sips, but her emotions were clearly not under control. As her lips puckered slightly, a tear fell from her eye, dropping into the milk, followed by a second and a third.
Brandon took the milk from her hands and looked at her.
She was looking back at him, eyes wide and brimming with tears, her upper teeth biting down on her lower lip, looking pitiful and slightly embarrassed.
As he looked over, she awkwardly turned her head and raised the back of her hand to cover her nose and mouth.
Brandon caught her hand, and as she looked at him, puzzled, he leaned in and kissed her, gently and tenderly.
