Don grabbed his phone and knocked on the door.

"Brandon, it's Sophia on the line, you picking up?"

A slight sigh came from inside, followed by the sound of stirring. In no time, the door was pulled open from the inside, and a hand reached out, "Hand it over."

His voice was a bit hoarse, and his expression was a frown.

Don passed the phone to Brandon. He took the phone, rubbing his forehead with his other hand, and then answered the video call.

"Daddy," with a voice as sweet as candy, Theresa's adorable little face popped up on the screen.

Don could clearly see Brandon's gaze pause for a second, a hint of sparkle fading from his eyes, but it quickly returned to the tenderness he reserved for Theresa.

"Aren't you asleep yet, Theresa?" He asked softly, "Where's Mommy?"

"Mommy's busy." Theresa put her finger to her lips and whispered, "I sneakily took Mommy's phone to call Daddy."

Brandon chuckled at himself but didn't say a word.

Theresa looked puzzled, "Is Daddy not happy?"

"No, Daddy's so happy you called," Brandon reassured her in a soft voice.

The little girl was easy to please; she grinned again and couldn't help but tattle to Brandon, "I wanted to call you so early, but Mommy said it would bother you. I secretly called you while Mommy wasn't looking. Don't tell Mommy, okay?"

Brandon was amused by her earnestness and nodded seriously, not telling her that Mommy could find out through the phone, "Okay, I won't tell Mommy."

"Daddy's the best," Theresa beamed.

Brandon chuckled along, glancing behind her in the camera, not seeing Sophia.

He knew Sophia wouldn't come looking, but he couldn't help asking Theresa, "Did Mommy tell you why I haven't come home?"

Theresa nodded, "Mommy said Daddy's working and will come home late."

"And Mommy hasn't looked for Daddy because he's not home yet?" He asked gently.

Theresa thought and shook her head, "No."

"Has Mommy mentioned Daddy to Theresa?"

After thinking again, she shook her head, "No."

"Not even once?" Brandon probed.

Theresa thought hard and then nodded, "No."

Brandon continued, "Has Theresa asked Mommy about me?"

Sophia touched her head with a resigned smile.

Theresa had already turned the phone screen toward her, "Daddy asked me to find you."

Sophia glanced at the screen instinctively. Brandon was looking at her, looking a bit weary.

"You still up?" He asked.

Sophia nodded, "Yeah, it's the weekend tomorrow, so no rush to sleep tonight."

She smiled awkwardly at him, "Theresa just took my phone without me noticing. I didn't expect her to know how to video call you."

"It's okay," Brandon replied nonchalantly.

Sophia wasn't sure what else to say, letting her gaze wander aimlessly in front of the camera. When she noticed a strange couch and a stuffed toy lying on it behind him, she paused briefly, and then looked at Brandon.

Brandon caught the hesitation and shift in her gaze but didn't point it out; just looking back at her, he asked, "What is it?"

Sophia shook her head, "Nothing."

Then she said to him, "Do you need to talk to Theresa?"

"I need you." Brandon cut her off, "I'm at Don's, had a bit too much to drink. Come pick me up, will you?"
