"So the first time you laid eyes on me was at the school gates?" Brandon asked, recalling the strange vibe he felt that day.

Sophia nodded lightly: "Yeah. I was just turning the corner and there you were, the center of attention, surrounded by President Poe and some of the other school big shots."

"You were staring at me for quite a while," Brandon said. "Didn't feel a thing back then?"

Sophia shook her head slightly, her lips pursing as she looked at him: "When I saw you that day, I was totally spaced out for a while. I can't really put my finger on it, but seeing you there, shining in the crowd, I felt proud yet a bit bummed, kinda bittersweet, y'know? It just seemed right that you should be admired from a distance, just shining there in the crowd."

Brandon managed a wry smile: "So when I looked back, you ducked out of sight, huh?"

She shook her head again: "Nope. I was so lost in thought that I was blocking the way. Had to dodge out of the path when a motorcycle came zooming by."

Brandon remembered the motorcycles whizzing past that day. He's been toyed with by fate so often that he wasn't even surprised anymore.

Sophia glanced at his handsome profile and continued softly: "That's why I was shocked when you just told me we're married. You said you fancied me, and I..."

She gave a bashful laugh: "I can't shake the feeling that you're just pulling one over on me because I've lost my memory."

Brandon's lips thinned as he looked at her: "I'm not lying to you."

"If it weren't for real feelings, I wouldn't have slept with you that night," Brandon said. "We've had our ups and downs, but through it all, you were the only one for me."

"There have been other people around me, sure. But from our school days to reuniting after college and right up to now, Sophia, I've always had a thing for you, and that hasn't changed."

The thought of the child only deepened the sadness in her heart.

"She's already on her way here," Brandon murmured softly. "You'll recognize her."

But she knew he wasn't.

Otherwise, she wouldn't be feeling such a strong emotional response.

Even though he knew she wouldn't.

In her heart, Theresa was what mattered most.

He wasn't.
