Sophia was hustling toward the restroom, her palm unconsciously weaving through her slightly disheveled hair, fingertips pressing against her throbbing head, thanks to the roller coaster of emotions she was riding.
She was seriously in a funk, her whole being sunken in the wave of sadness that had hit her out of nowhere. She was just following her gut, shuffling along the wall towards the restroom in hopes of chilling out her churning feelings. With her steps a bit frantic, she didn't notice the floor beneath her, and just as she was about to turn the corner past the sinks, she nearly crashed into a kid coming out. Luckily, she caught a glimpse of the little girl, who was only tall enough to reach her thigh, in the corner of her eye and managed to pull her foot back just in time.
But Sophia's sudden entrance still spooked the little one, who also made a screeching halt but, with her balance still a work-in-progress, plopped right onto the floor, her stuffed bear tumbling down with her.
The little girl looked like she had just lost something precious, scrambling to grab it.
Sophia got flustered too.
"Sorry kiddo, my bad for not watching where I was going. You okay? Didn't take a nasty spill, did you?"
Sophia rushed out an apology while crouching down to help pick up the teddy bear.
Susan was just about to leave with Theresa, shaking off the water from her hands, when she turned around to see Theresa flopped on the floor. Worried sick, she hurried over to help her up, but before Susan could touch Theresa, Sophia's familiar voice and outstretched arm froze her in her tracks, lifting her head in disbelief toward the source of the voice.
Theresa was about to scramble for her teddy bear, but Sophia's sudden voice made her freeze mid-action. Then, as fast as lightning, she spun around to face the voice and saw Sophia, already picking up the bear and stooping down to hand it to her.
Theresa was stunned.
"This..." He wanted to say something but found himself at a loss for words, turning to look at Sophia.
Sophia was still staring at Theresa, her tears falling even harder, almost at the point of choking up but desperately trying to hold it back.
Theresa's pout grew fiercer, her eyes redder, her silent crying gradually turning into whimpering sobs until it escalated into uncontrollable wailing.
She didn't approach but just stood there, watching Sophia cry her eyes out, the picture of misery.
