KYLE'S POV.

Eavesdropping on people's conversation is a shitty thing to do. I don't encourage it. I don't do it, but I couldn't help myself this time around. I was too eager to know what my father had come to discuss with Alpha Reagan. It's true he's going to tell me eventually, but I was too curious to wait so I sent away the guards always stationed at his office door and thanks to our heightened sense of hearing, I was able to follow the conversation through the closed door.

I am not impressed with what I heard.

My father and Alina are at it again.

My father is a very proud man. He hardly bows to anyone's will and the last thing he'd do is lick anyone's shoes because he's in need of what the person has to offer him. But his actions lately baffle me. He's acting like a desperate man and it's exhausting to watch.

It's even more exhausting to watch him give Alpha Reagan such a hard time and I wish I could do something to stop all madness.

“Father!” I call for the umpteenth time as I catch up with him outside the building premises. Just like the other times, he ignores my call and keeps striding towards his car, but I step in front of him, blocking his path and that finally gets him to stop.

“What do you want?” He asks in irritation. My shoulders sag. I let out a heavy sigh.

“Father, we need to talk!”

“If it's not about you convincing that Alpha of yours to man up to his responsibilities, then I don't think that will happen.” He takes a step to the right, but I do the same and block him yet again. His guards rush forward, but one dangerous side-eye from me makes them pause in their tracks and exchange frightened looks.

One step further and I'll send each one of them flying towards every corner of this premises. They know that because I've done it before. My silent warning seems to have sinked into their heads because they pace backwards and I look back at my father who's still frowning at me.

“Father, you need to stop this madness!”

“Madness!” He roars in disbelief. The wrinkles on his forehead become more prominent as his face darkens with rage. His nostrils flare and his eyes have a wild look in them, but none of that frightens me. Not anymore. “Madness you say?” He repeats and I nod my head, keeping a straight face.

“Yes, it's madness.”

“That man!” He points to the main entrance door. “Impregnate your sister and he's refusing to take responsibility for it, yet you…”

“No, he's not!” I cut him off in a bored tune. “He has promised to take care of Alina and the baby.”

“And you think that's enough? What about her honor? She deserves to have a place in his life, not to be his baby mama!”

“Father. You can’t force the man to marry someone he doesn't love. He has a fated mate!”

“Fated mate be damned!” He roars so loudly, I'm sure Alpha Reagan heard his voice from his office. “Alina is more fit and…”

“I don't want to hear it.” I wave a dismissive hand at his face, stopping him from preaching his usual sermon about Alina's competence and the strength and influence of our family in the pack. “It's embarrassing to see you two desperately seeking the Alpha's attention. Father please, you have to stop!” That plea earns me a heavy smack on my right check. The spot stings as though a thousand little ants are biting various spots on my cheek and I'm sure it is red by now. I suck in a deep breath, and face him again.

“I wonder all the time if you're truly my son!” He sneers. I chuckle lightly and take a dainty step forward, my eyes never leaving his face.

“Well, that's too bad, because right now you're staring at a face whose only difference from yours is the absence of a wrinkled forehead and sagging cheeks that come as a result of old age. I am your son. I am your blood and there's nothing you can do about that.”

“Get out of my way!”

“Your plans will fail. Alpha Reagan is not like the others. He will never bow to your will.”
