Chapter 191 Slaughter
“Their bodies have been cut too many times already. Any more wounds and they’ll surely die. Maybe we should let them heal for a while,” Maren lied to the leader.
The leader, not the sharpest, took her words at face value. He gestured towards a distant wooden hut, directing
her to find more meat there.
“Understood.” Maren hid her smile and maneuvered the food cart towards the hut.
The hut stood alone, eerily quiet without guards or a locked door, which seemed strange to Maren. Could it be
empty?
As she reached for the door, a whistle from above halted her.
She looked up to see a familiar silhouette on the roof.
“Sawyer! What are you doing here?” she asked, surprised.
With no savages in sight, Sawyer jumped down and stood next to her, giving her a quick once–over. “Are you alright? Did they hurt you?”
“Do you think they could hurt me? What about you? Why are you here?” she retorted.
Sawyer’s unexpected presence threw her. Their plan had him staying outside the village, coordinating from afar,
not venturing in.
“I got bored waiting out there. Thought I’d come in and see if I could lend a hand,” Sawyer replied with a shrug.
He was actually worried about her. Despite knowing Maren’s capabilities and the savages‘ lack of firearms, he
couldn’t help but feel anxious.
“Well, since you’re here, we might as well work together.”
This was related to the Sovereign Underworld. Maren hadn’t intended for Sawyer to get involved, but now that he was here, she couldn’t just send him away.
“I’d like that,” Sawyer responded with a relieved grin, fearing she might ask him to leave.
“I told the leader we needed more meat, so he pointed me to this hut.”
Together now, Maren briefed Sawyer on everything she had discovered so far, including what had happened in
the cellar.
Hearing that the savages kept humans as mere livestock shocked even Sawyer.
“On my way here, I found some bloody clothes and took pictures. These look like the Sovereign Underworld uniforms,” Sawyer shared, showing her the photos.
“They are,” confirmed Maren, recognizing the blood–stained, bullet–riddled uniforms.

<Chapter 191 Slaughter
“These savages don’t have guns. That means someone else has been clashing with the Sovereign Underworld,”
Sawyer deduced, his brow furrowed with concern.
Maren’s heart skipped.
“You’re hiding something, aren’t you?” Sawyer’s keen observation didn’t miss a beat.
His suspicions had been mounting for a while now.
Why else would Maren have hurried to Echucan with such urgency?
“You’re overthinking things,” Maren responded, quickly brushing aside his query.
The situation with Nikolas was still dicey. He might be in severe danger, and given the long–standing rift between the Warren family and the Sovereign Underworld, disclosing the truth to Sawyer could only stir up
more trouble..
Before Sawyer could delve further, Maren opened the hut’s door and stepped inside.
Behind her, Sawyer refrained from pursuing the matter.
Uncertain of what Maren was concealing, one thing was clear: he would never cause her harm over it.
While he didn’t possess the full picture, he respected her need for discretion. After all, they had previously stood on opposite ends as fierce adversaries.
“Why did you stop? What’s inside?” Sawyer queried as Maren abruptly stopped. His expression also changed
instantly.
“So many bodies. The stench–it’s overpowering, a mix of blood and decay. Where did all these come from?” he muttered under his breath. “Wait, these are all Sovereign Underworld operatives!”
The hut was crammed with corpses, piled high. Even Sawyer, usually calm and composed, was stunned.
At least a hundred bodies lay before them.
More than half were dressed in the Sovereign Underworld uniforms. The remaining bodies weren’t, but Sawyer recognized several faces among them–members of the Sovereign Underworld.
“These seem to be your subordinates,” Sawyer remarked, pointing to the familiar faces.
“Shard, Ares, Echo, Corvus…” Maren named them one by one, her voice heavy with sorrow.
Actually, they weren’t her subordinates; they were Nikolas‘ guards.
Each was more adept than any member of the Thanatos. They represented the elite of the Sovereign
Underworld.
“How did they meet their end here?” Maren moved closer, her face contorted with disgust as she inspected the bodies. Each one had succumbed to gunfire.
They had been protecting Nikolas during his retreat, but were later caught by members of the Sovereign Underworld and forced into a brutal firefight. The sheer number of fallen suggested they had faced
overwhelming firepower.
Not even Nikolas‘ guards had made it out.
