Island survival?

“Isn’t that just like the field training we went through back at the academy?” Morris muttered, the memory alone enough to make him shudder.

“This isn’t nearly as simple. This time, the survival training will take place on a small island, completely surrounded by water. There’ll be no supply stations, no resources, and you won’t be allowed to bring any equipment. The mission is to survive there for over fifteen days. And the island is crawling with wild beasts,” Daniel explained, leaving everyone stunned, especially those who had barely crawled their way back from their last outdoor training. Compared to that, this challenge felt like it had been cranked up tenfold.

“Mr. Smith, are we going to get killed out there?”

“There is danger involved. But this is a requirement set by the military. Soldiers must be able to survive harsh, unforgiving conditions and possess an indomitable will. Of course, this isn’t mandatory. Anyone who feels unprepared can choose to sit this one out,” Daniel replied calmly.

“Special forces? I heard each member of the special forces in Voutsas gets a house!” one of the students blurted out, wide–eyed.

Daniel nodded. “That’s correct. But your specific assignment will depend on your performance during the survival exercise. They will decide based on your results.”

Realization hit them all at once. This wasn’t just a prize. This was life–changing. If they performed well enough, their future would be secure.

The crowd buzzed with excitement.

“Also, don’t forget: during tonight’s meet–and–greet, survival experts will be there to teach you valuable tips and techniques. Make sure you attend,” Daniel said.

“Yes, Mr. Smith!” There was no way they’d miss it.

After a while, the bus rolled to a stop.”

“Alright, everyone, go get some rest for now. We’ll meet later tonight at the Harborstone Hotel,” Daniel

instructed.

Accommodations had already been arranged for the stúdents–all except for Maren. Once the others were dropped off, Daniel planned to personally drive Maren to the seaside villa district.

“That won’t be necessary, Mr. Smith. I can get there on my own.” Maren politely waved him off before hailing a taxi by the roadside and heading off.

Nadia glared at Maren’s taxi as it drove away, her eyes brimming with thinly veiled jealousy. Why did Maren have to stay in the villa while she stayed with the regular students? Clearly, Daniel was being partial.

Seated in the front of the taxi, Maren caught a glimpse of Nadia’s bitter stare from the rearview mirror. She

responded with a faint smile, unbothered.

It had been a while since she’d seen Isla, and she missed her a lot.

When the taxi pulled up, Maren stepped out and took a quick glance around. The environment was peaceful, the yard spacious and lush with greenery. A small swimming pool shimmered nearby, and the villa itself spanned three floors. It was practically a private estate.

Of course, all of this had been arranged by Daniel.

“Maren! You’re back, finally!” Just as Maren approached the door, ready to ring the bell, it swung open from the inside. A lively little girl flew straight into her arms, hugging her tightly. “I missed you so, so much…”

“I missed you too. Have you been behaving yourself?” Maren chuckled, ruffling her hair.

“Of course!” Isla answered proudly. “Stormclaw was teaching me to read just now, and he said I did really well!” She nuzzled her head deeper into Maren’s embrace.
