Chapter 206 The Marshall Family

“Nadia, why aren’t you eating?” Wilbur asked.

His voice snapped Nadia out of her thoughts. She swore she would make Maren pay during the island survival

tomorrow.

“Mr. Chadwick, it’s been some time,” Maren said courteously as she walked toward the panel of judges.

In the crowd, Alberto was the only familiar face she spotted.

Nearby, Stormclaw helped Isla into a different seat.

Thanks to Maren’s recommendation, Daniel had earned a place at the judges‘ table. Not only did he maintain his rank he had even climbed higher.

The gesture had erased any lingering tension between him and Maren. He now viewed her with complete appreciation.

“Come, Maren, sit beside Daniel,” Alberto said warmly as she approached.

If his grandson hadn’t already been spoken for, he might’ve considered her a perfect match.

As soon as she sat, a judge with a thick beard named Sheldon Howard leaned forward. “Maren, we’ve heard about your accomplishments today. Alberto mentioned your ability to hit distant targets. Is that true?”

“Sheldon, I said at least several hundred meters. That might not even be the full extent of her range,” Alberto chimed in.

Being praised so openly, Maren replied modestly, “Mr. Chadwick, you’re being far too generous. I wouldn’t call my shooting particularly outstanding.

It was just one of the many things she could do–not even her strongest asset.

“Skilled, modest, and young. A rare combination. I should introduce you to some of my cocky students,” Sheldon said, clearly impressed. “Ever thought about joining the military?”

“Come on, Sheldon. She’s made it clear she’s not interested in the military,” Alberto interjected, looking exasperated.

“Apologies, Mr. Howard. Mr. Chadwick is right–I have no intention of pursuing that path right now,” Maren responded.

“A shame.” Sheldon sighed. He had half expected the answer, but disappointment still lingered. “With your talents, staying confined to Baimsa seems limiting. You should aim higher.”

“I do have big goals, but I’m not built for the rigid lifestyle that comes with the uniform,” Maren replied simply.

Her dreams were vast, but they didn’t involve the military.

Everyone caught the message loud and clear.

Truthfully, most people preferred freedom. The armed forces demanded obedience, discipline, and compromise.

“Well, if you ever reconsider, give me a call. I’ll make sure you get the best offer and full choice of roles under

my command,” Sheldon offered.

“Exactly, Maren,” another judge added. “And if you don’t want to join him, my doors are open too.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” a third judge laughed. “If she’s going anywhere, it’s with my unit.”

Maren had only shown up expecting a quiet dinner; she hadn’t foreseen the judges fighting over her.

They eagerly passed her their contact cards, leaving nearby students wide–eyed.

Maren had no choice but to accept all the cards.

As her peers looked on in amazement, Nadia simmered with rage. She longed to be part of the military, but Maren didn’t give a damn about it.

Just then, Hannah came back from the restroom. “Nadia, I discovered something interesting,” she whispered as

she sat down.

“Spit it out,” Nadia said, disinterested unless it had something to do with ruining Maren.

“Lucien Marshall is throwing a party on the eighth floor,” Hannah informed her.

Worried Nadia might not grasp the significance, she added, “The Marshalls dominate Voutsas. Lucien is infamous for chasing women, and his family despises anything even remotely linked to the underworld. If we can make sure he crosses paths with Maren…”

She didn’t finish her sentence, but her sinister grin said enough.

Nadia’s interest returned immediately.

That was right. If Maren ran into Lucien, there was no way she wouldn’t offend him. With her personality, she would never tolerate someone like him.

And anyone who offended the Marshalls faced two outcomes either leave the city, or disappear permanently.

“That’s genius,” Nadia praised Hannah, Who would’ve thought a restroom trip would yield such gold?

She could finally use the Marshalls‘ influence to get rid of Maren.

As the gathering wrapped up, the judges began to leave one by one.

“Maren, there’s a birthday celebration for a Marshall tonight. As per etiquette, we’re expected to stop by on the eighth floor to pay respects before leaving. Good luck with the challenge tomorrow,” Sheldon said as he exited

with the others.

Hearing it involved the Marshalls, Maren immediately figured it had to be Lucien. She had something she needed to sort out with him anyway.
