“Wolves. A whole pack of them!” Morris‘ voice cracked as he trembled from head to toe.

“Maren, what is that?”

Before Maren could respond, a hulking shape appeared in the distance, charging toward them with alarming speed.

“Relax. That’s just the mother bear,” Maren said, already recognizing the familiar form.

The massive creature barreled past them without hesitation. Without so much as a glance, it rushed into the cave, grabbed its cubs–including the one that had clung to Maren–and bolted off again, vanishing into the dark.

It didn’t even stop to eat, leaving scraps of food scattered across the ground.

“They’re coming. The wolves,” Maren said flatly, watching the shadows deepen.

‘What? Wolves? What should I do? Should I hide somewhere?” Morris‘ voice rose into a squeak.

Darkness still blanketed the terrain, the paths hard to make out. Running wasn’t an option. The wolves would follow their scent and outrun them within minutes.

Unlike the bear, humans had no natural advantage. The wolves wouldn’t hesitate to hunt them down.

The mother bear could flee because its scent and size were enough to make the wolves think twice. Maren and Morris had no such luxury.

“Unless you can wedge yourself into a space they can’t reach, hiding won’t work,” Maren said flatly, dismissing the idea.

“Then what are we supposed to do?” Morris retorted, his voice full of desperation.

There was no way to run, and no place to hide. Was he really expected to fight the wolves? Maren had the skills to take them on, but he certainly didn’t.

Maren scanned their surroundings. A rocky outcrop loomed nearby–steep, uneven, but climbable. If they could

reach the top, the wolves wouldn’t be able to follow.

That spot also happened to be where Nadia and her group were stationed.

Climbing it wouldn’t be a problem for Maren. But Morris? His lack of agility made that route unlikely.

Before she could decide, a chorus of howls split through the night, echoing from multiple directions. The sound was getting closer, fast.

Something wasn’t right. Maren narrowed her eyes, her instincts on high alert. They weren’t just hunting. It felt

like they were being drawn–like someone had pointed them in this exact direction.

“Morris, don’t leave my side.” Maren’s voice cut through the night, calm but firm.

A knot twisted in Morris‘ stomach. “What exactly are you planning?”

“I’m getting us out of this mess.”

The words hit him like a punch to the gut. Did she mean they were charging straight through the pack?

“We don’t have any other options at the moment. We need to break through before the wolves trap us, or I won’t be able to protect you,” Maren said, picking up a cheetah bone, stripped clean, from the ground to use as

a weapon.

“Okay. I’m with you.” Morris swallowed his fear and nodded.

There was no time for doubt. No room for hesitation. Fighting was their only option.

With Maren leading the way, they burst from the cave, veering toward a thinner line in the pack’s formation.

High above, Nadia watched from the safety of elevated ground, arms crossed and eyes narrowed.

“How fortunate they woke up, but it doesn’t matter now. The wolves have already surrounded the area. Let’s see if they manage to escape this time!”

Wolves were deadly, and even a bite could be enough to give rabies.

One hundred percent fatal. No cure. No second chancès.

“Let’s see how long you last, Maren,” Nadia whispered with a cruel smile.

“Maren, where exactly are we heading?” Morris asked, struggling to keep pace with her.

“We’re moving inland,” Maren said, glancing over her shoulder without slowing.

The shoreline was behind them. If the wolves pushed them that far, it would be a dead end.

“Got it,” he said through ragged breaths.

But the moment they rounded a bend, a growl stopped them cold.

“On my twelve!” Morris shouted, panic flaring in his voice.

Maren didn’t pause. She grabbed his wrist and pulled him forward. Mid–stride, she flung the cheetah bone at the snarling wolf. It hit squarely, knocking the beast off balance.

As they reached the knocked wolf/ Maren snatched the bone back and smashed it across the wolf’s skull with a single, brutal swing.

They took off again, the path ahead still uncertain, but their pace never slowing.

“That fast?” Morris blinked in disbelief, stunned at how effortlessly Maren had taken the wolf down.

She didn’t even look shaken–her face as composed as if she’d simply stepped on a bug.
