“Mr. Turner, are you okay?”
“Yeah, what just happened?”
The crowd quickly turned their attention to Scotty.
Scotty stared in disbelief at every item Maren had touched. “Miss, what’s your name?”
“This is Maren Morgan.” Lucien quickly stepped in to introduce her.
Maren? The name struck a chord.
Scotty’s eyes narrowed. Something clicked in his memory. “Could this be your girlfriend? The one with connections to the underworld?”
That news had been all over the place. He’d heard the rumors.
“Yeah. That’s her,” Lucien admitted, looking slightly embarrassed.
“Lucien, you lucked out. That girl a master in antique appraisal. Her skills even put mine to shame.”
“What?”
Lucien blinked, caught off guard. That wasn’t what he’d braced for.
After all, Scotty was just as old–school as Lucien’s grandfather. While not openly hostile to the underworld, he certainly didn’t think highly of it.
Lucien hadn’t imagined that Scotty would not only praise Maren, but call her a master?
And Scotty even said she surpassed himself?
Lucien wasn’t the only one caught off guard. Around the room, the guests exchanged uncertain glances.
“Mr. Turner, are you serious? She’s barely out of her teens, and you’re calling her a master? Didn’t you just say she wasn’t even a professional?”
The disbelief hung in the air like thick smoke.
“I never said she wasn’t professional, I said her methods and assessments differed significantly from what we saw in seasoned professionals,” Scotty snapped. “Do you really judge a person’s skills just by these things?”
The world of antiques wasn’t about what methods people used to identity antiques.
Scotty’s comment cut through the room like a blade, leaving the group uncomfortably silent.
Lucien, meanwhile, was quietly thrilled. Scotty had just thrown his full weight behind Maren, and that validation settled something in him.

“Well then, Mr. Turner, what exactly makes her so remarkable?” Dunn asked.
Not long ago, Scotty had gone out of his way to praise Dunn. That praise had sat well with him. But hearing Maren get called a master? That didn’t sit right.
Scotty had only ever labeled Dunn a skilled appraiser. Not once had he use the word master. That stung. Was Maren really in a league above him?
Dunn wasn’t convinced. He didn’t believe she had it in her.
“Mr. Turner, if you don’t mind, could you elaborate? We’re curious too.”
The others weren’t looking to start a fight, not like Dunn, but they didn’t exactly see what made Maren exceptional either.
“Alright, I’ll explain briefly,”
Scotty knew he had to spell it out–if he didn’t, the group would never buy it. He motioned towards the collection Maren had sorted.
She had carefully placed the items she had checked aside to avoid wasting time.
“She’s checked these pieces. Can anyone tell me what’s special about them?” Scotty asked.
“What’s there to see? They’re junk. A couple look old, sure, but none of them are worth a dime. The rest are cheap knockoffs,” Dunn cut in before anyone else could speak.
The comment rubbed Scotty the wrong way, but he held his ground. Dunn wasn’t entirely wrong. None of the pieces had real monetary value. If even one had been valuable, Maren would’ve claimed victory already.
But Scotty wasn’t talking about price. “Did none of you notice the pattern in which she arranged them?”
Pattern?
They leaned in. The setup was deliberate–orderly, not thrown together.
“It’s the age,” Dunn muttered, eyebrows rising as realization hit. For a second, he looked stunned.
His background in antiques gave him an edge, and it clicked instantly.
Maren knew her stuff.
And Dunn wasn’t the only one shocked.
“Wow, she really did arrange them by age,” someone whispered. “I couldn’t even date half of those, but she nailed it.”
“That’s insane. She’s not clueless; she’s a genius!”
“I was wrong. I misjudged a true master.”
“How did she pull that off so quickly? It’s incredible. She even worked faster than the so–called expert from Ozel!”
