Chapter 266 Maren’s Wrath
Simon had heard Maren was back from the island competition and was eager to fill her in on everything happening in Voutsas.
He spoke with purpose, detailing his efforts to build ties with the city’s elite families.
Maren could hear it in his voice–Simon wasn’t just reporting progress. He was fired up, grateful, and more than anything, determined to make something real.
No one, especially not him, had ever pictured the Onyx planting roots in Voutsas. That city had always been off -limits–hostile territory for anyone in the underworld.
Trying to live up to her trust, Simon laid it all out. They’d already pulled a few smaller families under their wing. Things were moving fast.
“Impressive.” Listening to Simon lay out everything he’d pulled off in just a few days, Maren felt the quiet certainty settle in–she’d made the right call.
“Maren, is that you?” a woman’s voice cut in. Dressed in a sharp business suit, a woman in her thirties was walking straight towards Maren.
Maren looked up from her phone.
“It is you!” the woman beamed, recognition lighting up her face.
“You’re Ms. Morrison!” Maren blinked, the name landing with a flicker of surprise.
It was her middle school teacher, Olivia Morrison.
School never meant much to Maren back then, but the only teacher she liked was Olivia, who had once gone out of her way to help her.
“I can’t believe it’s really you, Maren. When the principal said a guest was stopping by and mentioned that name, I figured it was a coincidence. Never thought it’d actually be you. Look at you–you’ve really changed. So, what brings you to Voutsas?” Olivia’s eyes sparkled with surprise and joy at seeing Maren again.
“Not much, really. A relative’s kid goes to school here, so I thought I’d drop by and see how she’s doing,” Maren replied casually.
The truth was too complicated to explain, and honestly, it wasn’t worth the effort.
“Ms. Morrison, when you got promoted to teach at Voutsas Middle School, the other teachers were so envious. After all these years, I’m sure you’ve only become even more impressive.”
There were a handful of middle schools in Voutsas, and Maren hadn’t expected Olivia to be working at the one Isla now attended–Voutsas Middle School.
She figured Olivia would be pleased to talk about her current role. But to her surprise, Olivia’s face faltered. A

hint of sadness flashed in her eyes.
“Let’s not talk about that. You’re here to see the child, right? The principal mentioned it. They’re in gym does I’ll take you there.” Olivia quickly changed the subject, clearly not wanting to dwell on the past.
“Ms. Morrison?” Maren asked, confused.
Back then, Olivia had been a rising star–young, successful, and passionate about education She’d been brimming with energy and confidence. But now, there was something subdued in her expression
Maren opened her mouth to ask more, but Olivia had already turned to walk, calling over her shoulder for ber
to follow.
With no other choice, Maren quickened her pace, falling in step behind her. Together, they made their way to the playground.
Voutsas Middle School looked just like any other public school. The playground was nothing like the sprawling fields of private academies.
Some parts of the ground were still dirt paths, and the overall feel of the place was old and work, completely out of place in a city like Voutsas.
“The environment’s a bit rough,” Maren muttered to herself, recalling the quick tour she’d taken when Isla was
enrolled.
Living here long–term would probably have its challenges.
Out on the playground, students dashed around, laughing and playing under the warm sun–full of energy and
life.
“Isla is over there.” Maren scanned the area, quickly spotting a familiar small figure.
Isla was sitting on the steps, chatting with a short–haired girl. Both of them were smiling, clearly enjoying each
other’s company.
She made a friend that fast?
A soft smile tugged at Maren’s lips. Isla seemed happy, fitting right in with school life, and that eased her mind
“Isla is a sweet one–quick to pick things up too. Several of the teachers have mentioned how well she does in class.” Olivia followed Maren’s gaze and smiled.
Maren could see that Olivia truly cared for Isla.
“Really? She’s well–behaved and bright. Are you her teacher?” Maren asked, hopeful.
She remembered Olivia as a gentle, capable educator. If she were Isla’s teacher, it would be perfect.
