Chapter 286 Intimacy
This wasn’t the first time Sawyer had tailed Maren. And unfortunately for Maren, Sawyer’s skills were on par with hers. That was why Maren was unable to detect Sawyer.
Sawyer didn’t deny it. In fact, he had been keeping tabs on Maren all along
Once whispers reached him about her entanglement with Lucien, the Marshall heir known more for scandal than substance, his surveillance only deepened. His gut told him Lucien might exploit her. Thankfully, that worry never came to pass.
“Maren, are you ready? I need a word.” Lucien’s voice came from outside the restroom.
“Get the mask back on. You can’t be seen like this,” Maren whispered quickly, urgency cutting through her
voice.
A single mistake now could ruin her plan.
“Yeah, alright,” Sawyer muttered, tugging the disguise over his face with clear reluctance. It had been so long since he had seen her, and now she was pretending to be someone else’s girlfriend. The thought alone left him bitter. He had hoped they could talk longer.
Maren told him to stay hidden for now. Exiting the women’s restroom with a man in staff uniform would raise suspicions, even more so in a place like this. Luckily, no one else had come in.
Maren stepped out, intending to report back to Lucien with everything she’d learned.
“You sure they’re faking it? If we get this wrong, the fallout might end up playing right into their hands.”
“Believe me, there’s no mistaking it. I’ve been with enough women to know–Maren’s untouched,” Higgs said with certainty. “She’s nothing like you. Her eyes don’t hold seduction. They’re clear, innocent. A girl like that— especially with a face like hers–would’ve been molded into something else entirely if she’d ever been with a
man.”
As Maren made her way past the corridor between the restrooms, hushed voices drifting from the men’s side caught her attention.
She recognized them instantly.
Higgs and Yvette–of course it was them. Slowing her pace, Maren listened, quickly realizing they were discussing her.
Yvette’s voice came again, edged with skepticism. “That might be true, is having them act all lovey–dovey in public really going to expose them? What if she’s willing to go along with it? All it takes is a small sacrifice.”
The strategy of forcing Maren and Lucien to appear close in front of the Marshall family—especially Calvert- might crack their performance. But it was a gamble. If Maren didn’t take the bait, it could reinforce their illusion, making their connection appear genuine.

<Chapter 286 Intimacy
“Don’t worry. Maren would never sacrifice herself like that. I’ve looked into everything. She used to be obsessed with Wilbur Thorpe–so obsessed she would’ve died for him. The guy has slept with many women He tried to get with her too, but she never gave in and cut him off completely. He sees her as an enemy now, but she doesn’t seem to regret any of it.”
While he spoke, Higgs pulled out his phone and tapped open a document. A file on Maren–her personal
history.
“I’ve already told my father and grandfather that Maren’s relationship with Lucien is fake. All that’s left is a sliver of proof,” he added, showing the file to Yvette.
Yvette arched a brow, scanning the details. “So she really hasn’t slept with anyone? That kind of beauty–and no one’s touched her? What a waste.”
“Not every woman’s like you, you know. Clinging to a man like you’ll die without one,” Higgs retorted, his voice
lined with scorn.
In truth, his preferences leaned towards women untouched by others. Most of the women in his past fit that
mold.
“That’s funny. It didn’t seem to be a problem the last time we were in bed together. And now you drag me into the men’s room? Don’t act like this is strictly business.” Without hesitation, Yvette’s hand slid down, fingers slipping into his waistband–her expression cold, her move deliberate.
“Yvette…” Higgs was already worked up from his frustration over Maren, and now Yvette took matters into her own hands by seizing him below.
“You brought this on yourself!”
Feeling undermined by Maren’s earlier implications that Yvette was the one pulling the strings, Higgs felt a compelling need to regain his dominance.
Without hesitation, he started to rip away Yvette’s clothing, and she surrendered to his advances.
Meanwhile, just outside the door, Maren had stopped hearing their voices and assumed their conversation had died down. She pressed her ear closer to the door, only to be greeted by the unmistakable sounds of Yvette’s passionate cries.
“Ugh…” Maren pulled back, repulsed. Were they seriously engaging in that right here, right now?
“You’re in for some real trouble,” Sawyer said, appearing next to her. He had caught every word of their exchange as well.
“It’s definitely a major issue,” Maren replied, her disdain for Higgs evident. Despite despising him, she couldn’t deny that his analysis was spot on.
If they didn’t play along, the whole act would fall apart. Everyone knew. Lucien had a reputation for flirting. If a woman like Maren was really with him, no one would buy that he’d kept his distance.
But Maren just couldn’t bring herself to fake closeness with him in front of everyone.
She was at a loss. What was her next move?
