Maren had led Lucien into the women’s restroom not long before. Now, barely twenty minutes had passed, and they were stepping back into the party together.

The crowd was alive with whispers and speculations about their quick return.

Sawyer exhaled deeply upon hearing the chatter, while Maren couldn’t her but giggle behind her hand.

“They’re not talking about you, relax,” she teased, poking fun at his discomfort.

Had she remained silent, perhaps Sawyer would have been less affected, but her comment made him stiffen.

He was well aware the remarks weren’t directed at him.

“Keep it together. The Marshall family is watching. We need to tread carefully,” he said, catching the watchful eyes of some guests and using it to deflect from the moment’s tension.

Higgs had briefed his family that she and Lucien were merely pretending to be a couple. This news suited the Marshall family well. Yet, they still lacked conclusive evidence to fully leverage this situation.

“We should show them more affection,” Maren suggested, as she playfully fed Sawyer a slice of cake.

“Dad, are we really taking Higgs‘ claims at face value? I don’t see Maren and Lucien staging this. I mean, I know Lucien well enough. He enjoys his fun, but he wouldn’t joke about something as grave as this.” Edwin advocated
