“Exactly.” This was the very reason Higgs dared to go head–to–head with Lucien.

Within the younger bloodline of the Marshall family, only three were in serious contention: Lucien, Ernest, and Higgs himself.

At first, the military threw its weight behind Ernest, grooming him to inherit the Marshall family.

But the Marshalls weren’t fools. After years of Ernest riding on military coattails, the family had grown wary. Trust was a luxury they couldn’t afford to extend blindly.

“Still, you lost to Maren.” Nadia’s expression darkened like a storm cloud.

All that big talk, only to find out he’d been outplayed by Maren?

While Higgs had sent people to get rid of Maren, Nadia had been stranded on that godforsaken island, fighting to survive. And now, she realized she’d backed the wrong horse.

“Come on, give me a break. That was a one–time setback. I’ve got a real shot now–I’ll take out both Lucien and Maren,” Higgs snapped.

“Then tell me.” Nadia’s voice was ice. She was done humoring him.

“Originally, I only had to deal with Lucien. But now that Maren’s involved, I can’t beat him head–on. So I changed the target.” Higgs smirked, the kind of grin that promised something wicked.

“You’re going after Maren?” Nadia asked, probing.

Higgs was clearly frustrated. Why waste time fighting Maren? With her and Lucien working as one, they were

untouchable here in Voutsas.

Though Higgs had armed forces in his corner, real power rested with the Marshalls. No regional troops could topple that family–especially not with Maren and her loyal enforcers guarding it. Unless Shawn stepped into the fray, Higgs didn’t stand a chance.

Still, dragging Shawn into the mix came with risks. He could take offense, view Higgs as incompetent, and turn

hostile. That would only make matters worse.

But dealing with Calvert was a whole different story.

If Calvert were removed, his grip on the succession would break. That would leave Higgs and Lucien to vie for

the title without interference.

Despite Lucien’s alliances with Maren and Ernest, the latter held no real weight–just a cog in a larger system

that already leaned toward Higgs.

And while Maren had muscle and street sway, her roots didn’t run deep in the Marshall family.

So, logically, Higgs stood to gain the most.

“Aha!” Nadia exclaimed, eyes widening. “When you claim the Marshall family, Lucien becomes irrelevant. He’ll be powerless. And once you’ve united both the army and the Marshall family under your banner, sweeping

Lucien and Maren aside will be effortless.”

“Sharp mind,” Higgs acknowledged. At this stage, capturing the family’s leadership was everything.
