Calvert’s hand froze mid–motion as he was about to hang up. “Are you one of the Williams family pulling Higgs ‘strings?” he asked.

Off to the side, Higgs visibly stiffened, the tension in the room suddenly thick enough to cut.

“Now, can we talk?” Shawn’s voice dripped with mockery, a tone that grated against Calvert’s pride.

“Fine,” Calvert muttered, jaw tight. “Let’s talk.”

The following morning, after dropping Isla off at school, Maren and Stormclaw returned home and settled in the dining room for a quiet breakfast. Without warning, the door burst open and a man stormed inside, breathless with fury.

“Unbelievable! What is Grandpa thinking? Higgs poisoned him, yet he refuses to have him executed!” Lucien dropped into a chair opposite Maren, his expression a storm of indignation, cheeks burning with anger.

“I didn’t make extra for you,” Maren said with a dry chuckle, eyes lowered as she sliced into her meal.

“Come on, not now. I’m not in the mood for your teasing,” Lucien grumbled, sulking. Watching Maren’s unwavering calm, he frowned. “Did you know all along that Grandpa wouldn’t go through with killing Higgs?”

“Let me guess,” Maren said coolly, barely pausing between bites. “Higgs spoke with your grandfather, didn’t he?”

“That’s exactly what happened.” Lucien reached for a glass, took a long sip to ease his throat. “Yesterday, I found the poisoning tools–just like you told me to. Turns out, that bastard Higgs stole them from us. They were meant to be gifts for Grandpa. He tried to frame us! So I—”

“So you rushed straight to your grandfather with the evidence, didn’t you?” Maren cut in.

“Yes. I couldn’t hold back my anger,” Lucien admitted sheepishly. He cringed, recalling how Maren had warned him to stay quiet and bring the evidence to her. But the moment he saw Higgs trying to slip away, he had acted on instinct and tied the man up on the spot.

“And your grandfather blew up at first, then calmed down after a little chat with Higgs, right?” Maren continued,

her voice even.

Lucien’s frustration deepened. “Exactly! How did you know that?”

It had played out exactly that way the night before.

Calvert had been livid, dragging Higgs into the room. But when he emerged later, the fire in his eyes had vanished. Instead of punishment, he had merely locked Higgs and his co–conspirators away.

“My guess? He’s tied to the Williams family.” Maren gave Lucien a conci rundown of the Williams family’s entanglement in the matter.

Lucien’s face went pale, the revelation hitting him like a blow. “That explains everything! So that ambush with the armor piercing rounds… It was them! The Williams family is that powerful?”

A chilling thought crept in–maybe the Marshall family wasn’t strong enough to oppose them after all.

“Thinking of surrendering?” Maren asked suddenly, her eyes narrowing
