Chapter 34 Time To Move

“I’m starting to see the whole picture now!”

At the base, Alberto erupted in laughter the moment he noticed what was unfolding.

“She surely is smart!” He praised Maren without hesitation.

Rosaline felt utterly puzzled. She recalled how Alberto had been scolding Maren not too long ago.

Moreover, she couldn’t understand what was so clever about Maren.

“Mr. Chadwick, I’m not following. Would you tell me what’s happening over there?”

All Maren did was ambush an instructor who didn’t have a weapon, right?

Why did Alberto act like it was such a huge deal?

To her surprise, Alberto looked displeased. “You’re Maren’s instructor, but you don’t even know about her.”

Nonetheless, he explained patiently, “Have you wondered why Maren didn’t slip into the forest like all the others?”

“I have no clue.” Rosaline shook her head and frowned.

She always thought Maren was either too timid or not very bright. Maren’s grades were the worst in the class, and her abilities were barely noticeable. It seemed logical that she would avoid the forest since so many classmates had set their sights on her.

“In every military academy I’ve been to, students sprinted towards the heart of the forest right away. They thought it was simple to lie in wait and jump on others there, but they failed to consider a crucial factor.”

Alberto stopped talking for a moment, so Rosaline spoke up right away. “What did they miss?”

“Jeff and his team have been here before, but this is a brand–new environment for the students. With such difficult terrain, who do you believe has the upper hand?”

Rosaline listened to Alberto’s explanation and felt utterly astonished.

It dawned on her that Jeff’s group might already be aware of every hiding place her students fought to discover.

If they chose those same spots, they would walk right into Jeff’s hands.

So the perimeter turned out to be the safer spot?

“But that idea isn’t completely accurate. My students are armed, while jeff and his team couldn’t bring their own weapons.”

Alberto let out another burst/of laughter without warning. “Not carrying guns doesn’t mean they won’t find any along the way. What do you think those drones dropped off?”

Rosaline stood still, baffled by Alberto’s remark.

Even if Jeff’s squad didn’t arrive with firearms, nothing stopped them from using guns once they were on–site.

“Sir, why didn’t you inform me about this earlier?”

A sense of regret hit Rosaline as she realized her oversight.

In an environment so familiar to those retired soldiers, she couldn’t help but wonder how her own students stood a chance.

Worse still, they were too busy fighting each other to notice the real threat.

“Tell you? Why would I do that? Who knows if you’d secretly warn your students? I didn’t tell any of the other academies either. If your students can’t handle even this, why should the higher–ups take your academy seriously?”

Rosaline couldn’t muster a single word in response to Alberto’s remark.

Moments later, Alberto shifted his gaze towards Maren on the screen, and his grin grew even bigger.

“That was brilliant. She guarded the entrance and took action before Jeff’s team could get their hands on any weapons. Even I didn’t see that coming.”

A flood of questions raced through Rosaline’s mind. She had never thought Maren possessed such skill.

Meanwhile, Max stood there with Maren pointing a gun at him, sweat beading on his forehead as he realized the humiliation of being taken down by a student.

Thankfully, Maren lowered her gun a moment later.

Relief washed over Max as he finally released the breath he’d been holding.

“Go on. You can carry on without me.”

After storing her weapon, Maren continued perching on the rock and waved for them to leave, so long as they didn’t trouble her.

Jeff swiftly grasped Maren’s strategy.

If his team cleared out everyone inside the forest, Maren would remain unhindered outside and claim the win.

She was truly remarkable.
