Chapter 49 A Wolf

Maren, wait for me!Morris yelled, his arms heavy with wild fruits as he sprinted to keep up.

Luck seemed to be on his side.

Previously, their trek had yielded nothing but poisonous mushrooms. Yet, as soon as he chose to follow Maren, they stumbled upon an abundance of edible fruit. Seeing Maren eat them reassured him they were safe.

These wild fruits proved to be deliciously sweet and juicy, replenishing his hunger and thirst and soothing his cravings.

Morris, who had been on the brink of desperation enough to consider eating tree bark, didn’t hold back. He gorged on over twenty fruits, then gathered more to take with him.

To him, Maren appeared almost heavenly at this moment.

His decision to trail her was proving to be his most prudent yet.

However, Maren’s distant manner and swift stride were challenging; Morris found himself almost running to maintain her pace.

Suddenly, a stark howl shattered the calm, causing Morris to jump and drop some of his fruit.

Another howl followed, louder and closer.

It’s a wolf!Fear trembled in Morriscall as he dropped more fruits. Maren! Please, wait for me!

With no time to hesitate, he burst into a sprint to close the distance between them.

Still, the howling persisted.

When Morris finally reached Maren, he was on the verge of panic. He wanted to discuss their next move, but Maren continued to stroll and snack on wild fruits as if oblivious to the danger.

We’ve got a wolf on our trail,Morris reminded her, his voice filled with alarm.

Yes, I’ve heard it,Maren replied calmly.

Morris was dumbfounded; he had assumed Maren was unaware of the danger. She actually didand she was still this calm about it?

We need to run now! If it catches us, we’re finished!

Morris was terrified. What was meant to be a training exercise now seemed dangerously real.

He spun around to flee.

Maren casually took another bite of her fruit. The wolf is less than a hundred meters away, and the forest edge is over a thousand meters, Do you think running is the best option?

Chapter 49 A Wolf

Morris halted abruptly.

Navigating the dense undergrowth, tangled roots, and cluttered branches made fleeing on

Outrunning a wolf or making it to the edge of the forest appeared even more unlikely.

So what should we do? We can’t just wait around to be caught!

The wolf’s howl intensified, sounding closer with each moment.

Nord Oot seem futile.

Wait a minute! Wolves don’t climb trees! With that thought, Morris hastily attempted to climb a nearby tree.

The trees, however, stood at least ten feet tall without any low branches, presenting a challenge he wasn’t prepared for. His attempts to climb were unsuccessful, and he kept sliding down.

This is the end! I’m done for!Morris cried, now regretting the burden of fruits he still carried.

Keep calm,Maren said, finishing her fruit and discarding the seed. She then picked up a small stone, weighed it in her hand, and effortlessly climbed a large tree with swift, adept movements.

Morris looked on in amazement.

How had she managed that?,

He had no time to ponder, as the underbrush rustled menacingly.

Suddenly, a large gray wolf burst through, its eyes fixed on them.

Maren, help me up!Morris yelled, gripping the tree as he gazed up at her desperately.

Maren, focused on the wolf below and irritated by his cries, retorted, Be quiet. Any more noise and I’ll leave

you to it.

Morris quickly silenced himself.

His mouth might have stopped making noise, but his legs couldn’t stop shaking as he stared down at the terrifying wolf. Soon, a noticeable wet stain appeared on his trousers.

Tears threatened to overcome Morris. He deeply regretted his decision to follow Maren.

With a fearsome howl, the wolf charged.

It darted towards Morris with such speed that it was merely a blur to him.

This is the end! I’m really going to die!

Overcome by dread, Morris shut his eyes tight, preparing for the worst.

However, time passed, and nothing occurred.

When he finally dared to open his eyes, the sight that met him was unforgettable.

He was astounded.
