Chapter 59 She Saved Me
“Make way, please.” Maren lightly nudged them with her foot from inside the car. Shocked, the group
automatically moved aside.
With room to maneuver, Maren exited the vehicle.
She paused, taken aback by the sheet number of people gathered.
Yet, someone else was even more taken aback.
That person was Ashton.
“Maren? Why are you here?” Ashton’s expression shifted from surprise to dismay as Maren stepped out.
“Mr. Blake, you must have mistaken the car for your boss’s,” Ashton quickly said to Westley.
Then, turning towards Maren, Ashton snapped, “I told you to cancel the duel with the dean! Why are you here?
This isn’t the place for you!”
Wilbur had already briefed Ashton on Maren’s recent actions at the military academy.
Learning that Maren had declined an invitation from Alberto to join the state military–and hadn’t even suggested Nadia as an alternative–Ashton had nearly decided to confront her at the academy.
“Ashton, have you lost your mind? Do you even remember what respect looks like?” Westley was about to introduce Maren as their leader when he was interrupted by Ashton’s outburst. Was Ashton losing his senses?
Westley quickly intervened, grabbing Ashton by the collar with a menacing presence honed from years in the
criminal underworld, causing Ashton to catch his breath.
“Stop it!” William, Cullum, and Bobby were caught off guard by the escalation. They sprang into action, pulling
Westley away from their father.
“Mr. Blake, why are you doing this?” Ashton looked around, bewildered. He was merely disciplining his
daughter,
But Westley was clueless about all of it. He was winding up to throw a punch when he suddenly noticed Maren giving him a pointed, warning glare.
Westley hesitated, trying to decipher her expression.
Then, with an easy stride, Maren stepped forward and held out her hand. “Pleasure to meet you. I’m Maren Morgan; Ashton’s my father.”
What? It suddenly clicked for Westley. So Ashton was Maren’s father.
From Ashton’s reaction and those of his family, it was evident they were unaware of Maren’s role in the Onyx.
Maren, for her part, seemed intent on keeping it that way.

“It’s a pleasure, Miss Morgan. I’m Westley Blake, in charge of the east district for the Onyx,” Westley responded, offering his hand in greeting.
Their handshake was brief and formal.
“Mr. Blake, could you explain how you know my daughter?” Ashton, still puzzled, couldn’t fathom why Maren would be the guest of honor.
If it wasn’t for the fear of offending Westley, he would have pressed for more details immediately.
“You might want to ask Simon about that,” Westley replied, unable to divulge the true nature of their connection.
Fortunately, Simon chose that moment to emerge from the car alongside Maren, prompting Westley to delay the question to him.
Ashton’s surprise deepened at the sight of Simon. He had briefly thought perhaps there was a mix–up with the car, but with Simon now visibly present, the reality of the situation was undeniable.
Simon was a figure whose influence was renowned throughout the city; there could be no mistake about his identity.
Simon had observed the entire exchange. Due to their hurried arrangements, he hadn’t fully briefed Maren beforehand. He had mentioned a meeting with an influential local family but hadn’t realized it would be her
own.
It was evident to Simon that Maren’s relationship with her family was strained. They seemed completely out of touch with who Maren truly was.
“Maren once saved my life. I owe her a great debt.” Simon knew he couldn’t expose Maren’s real identity, but at the same time, he couldn’t afford to diminish it either. So, he carefully put together a story that struck a careful balance.
“You’re saying she saved your life?”
Ashton, Wilbur, Nadia, William, Cullum, and Bobby were all visibly shocked.
Not one of them could make sense of what was happening.
Ashton stared at Maren, stunned and full of doubt. Since when had she grown into someone so capable?
“Did you really save his life?” Ashton asked, feeling as though he was seeing Maren for the first time.
“In a certain sense,” Maren responded evenly, going along with Simon’s narrative.
“What do you mean by ‘in a certain sense‘? Did you save him or not?” Wilbur asked.
“Maren, when did that happen? You’ve never brought it up before. How exactly did you end up saving him?” Nadia asked, her voice laced with curiosity, though deep down, she didn’t buy it at all. As far as she was concerned, there was no chance Maren had ever had any real ties to the underworld.
This encounter was supposed to be their initial meeting. So why was Simon already vouching for Maren?
Maren picked up on the underlying skepticism in Nadia’s questions.

Simon noticed as well. “Mr. Morgan, shall we continue our conversation here outside?”
“Certainly not! We have arranged a private meal just for you on the top floor. Please, follow me upstairs.”
Though Ashton was burning with questions about the revelations, he knew better than to pry at such a moment with such an important guest present.
Besides, now that he had learned his daughter had once saved Simon’s life, he assumed the rest would
naturally work itself out. For the first time in a long while, Ashton offered Maren a rare and genuine smile.
Did the specifics matter if Simon had already expressed his gratitude?
Ashton then escorted Simon and Westley into the Phoenix Palace, leading the way to the reserved area upstairs.
Ashton engaged in light conversation along the route, hoping to strengthen their connection.
The rest of the family trailed behind them.
“Maren, you’ve yet to explain. How did you come to know Mr. Miller?” Nadia asked, catching up to Maren.
Ashton might overlook the details, but she was persistent.
“Why does it matter to you?” Maren responded dismissively, quickening her pace.
Nadia halted, her expression turning cold.
She realized Maren had seen through her probing and wasn’t inclined to disclose anything.
Nadia fumed silently, staring at Maren’s retreating figure.
She had envisioned this event as her stepping stone. Yet, the influential figure she hoped to impress was none
other than Maren, who already seemed to have a significant relationship with the gang leader.
This revelation was intolerable to Nadia.
“Isn’t it strange how close Maren appears to be with the gang?”
Lagging behind, William, normally the reserved eldest brother, finally spoke up, addressing everyone.
