Unbothered, Sawyer calmly pushed the knife away from his neck. “Relax, just messing with you.”

He’d seen enough of her temperament to know exactly how far to push. Any further, and she’d show him just how lethal she could be.

“I was too naive back then,” Maren muttered, clearly unwilling to dwell on past events. “The Thorpe family have powerful connections throughout Baimsa. If Wilbur dies, it’ll blow up fast.”

She knew she’d been reckless lately, attracting more attention from the Sovereign Underworld than she’d like.

Of course Sawyer knew this; it simply amused him to test her limits. “So he gets a free pass because he’s well- connected, but you’re totally fine threatening me with a blade at my neck? Seems fair.”

Maren chose to remain quiet.

“Let’s be real. You and Wilbur are not as close as us. So what’s the problem with me calling you May?” Sawyer continued when Maren didn’t reply.

Maren asked, “So, what exactly are we, then?”

“We’re partners. And not just partners–together, we’re unstoppable,” Sawyer answered earnestly after a thoughtful pause, eyes sincere.

To her own surprise, Maren couldn’t suppress a quiet laugh. Had Sawyer always been this smooth with his words?

Taking her laughter as a green light, he grinned. “So, can I keep calling you May?”

Instantly, Maren’s brief amusement vanished. “Not a chance.”

“Why not? If it bothers you so much, I’ll even let you call me by my nickname. Isn’t that fair?” Sawyer wasn’t done. “Mine’s…”

“Enough already.” Maren clearly didn’t care about his silly nickname. “If you’re done here, go bother someone else.”

“You really haven’t changed,” Sawyer murmured, giving her a helpless grin.

“I don’t waste my time pretending.” Maren replied coolly, still puzzled by his stubborn insistence on lingering

around her.

Besides, he hardly resembled the person she once remembered.

Maren failed to notice just how deeply Sawyer had changed. The shock of nearly losing her had stirred something genuine in him. He wasn’t hanging around just to annoy her–this time, he intended to truly reach

her heart.

Yet Sawyer knew Maren felt absolutely nothing for him now. Confessing his feelings openly would probably mean losing even her friendship. She wouldn’t hesitate to remove him from her life.

“You’re really kicking me out like this? No celebratory dinner after your big win?” Sawyer teased, arching a playful eyebrow

“Maybe another time. I’m busy right now.”

“Can you specify ‘another time‘? I’d like to mark it down on my calendar.”

“Get lost!”

After finally escaping Sawyer’s presence, Maren quietly headed home.

Approaching the gate, she quickly noticed several TV network vans lined up neatly near the gate.

“Just as I suspected!”

She’d suspected someone was deliberately hyping her duel with Daniel for media attention, and now the

culprit seemed painfully obvious.

It didn’t take much thought to figure out who was behind this pathetic circus.

She wasn’t interested in playing these juvenile games.

As she reached for the villa’s door, a voice from inside suddenly caught her ear, making her pause sharply.

“As I’ve said repeatedly, Maren has severely tarnished our family’s reputation. This reckless duel will surely cause our stocks to plummet. Even though she’s my daughter, I can no longer defend her actions. Today, in front of all of you, I officially sever my relationship with her. From now on, she is no longer part of our family!”

Inside the villa, Ashton was busy performing passionately for the cameras.

From the moment Maren shown up at the military academy, Ashton had carefully crafted this dramatic speech, listing every alleged offense she’d committed.
