Jane had an emergency today and had to take leave to go home, so I went to the kitchen to make some pasta. Just as I was about to sit down and eat, I heard the sound of a car horn blaring outside. Peeking out the window, I saw Abigail pulling into the driveway.

Joshua was no longer sitting in the passenger seat. I glanced at the time and realized that only half an hour had passed. Abigail could really keep it together.

I watched as she opened the door and entered the house, so I greeted her casually, "Hey, you're back."

She nodded at me. After sitting down, she looked at me and asked calmly, "Eating alone again? Is that all you're having?"

"What else should I do?" I replied, keeping my tone even. "Should I waste my time and effort to prepare a table full of dishes for someone who doesn't know when she'll return?

Abigail's expression changed slightly. She clearly knew what I meant.

Back then, Abigail once told me that she liked my cooking, so I signed up for a bunch of cooking classes to learn how to make various dishes. I tried my best to learn all the dishes so I could cook for her.

However, she never returned on time to eat when I finally knew how to make all those dishes.

At first, I tried to convince myself that she must be really busy with work and that it was normal that she didn't have the time to come back for meals. But as time went on, I lost hope. I realized that no matter how well I cooked, she wasn't going to come back.

The more I hoped, the more disappointed I became. Eventually, all these disappointments piled up and became something that weighed me down, something I couldn't get rid of.
