When Samantha noticed how panicked Hazel became after she took her phone, a sly grin spread across her face. “Hazel, you were refusing to buy me a phone just a moment ago, and now you are suddenly offering to get one for me. I am really curious about this sudden change. Is there something on your phone you are hiding?” 

This was Hazel’s personal business. What did it have to do with Samantha? 

With a straight face, Hazel responded, “Samantha, this is my private matter. It has nothing to do with you, so you should not be snooping through my phone. If you do, I will report you for invading my privacy.” 

Samantha’s lips curled into a mocking smile. “Hazel, I have no interest in your secrets. I will give you one hour to go and buy me a phone. If you do not return in time, the phone is mine.” 

Upon realizing Samantha was not bluffing, Hazel bolted as fast as she could. Once Hazel had left, Samantha collected the diamond necklace from the police, and the crowd of students began to disperse. 

Now, only Samantha and Emily were left in the hallway. Emily extended her hand and said, “Give me the diamond necklace.” 

Did Emily seriously believe Samantha went through all this trouble to get the necklace from Hazel just to hand it over to her? 

If so, Emily was completely mistaken. 

“Emily, even though Hazel gave you this diamond necklace, I will not give it to you. Do you know why?” 

Emily played along. “Why?” 

“I was the one who worked hard to make Hazel hand over this necklace so that I could sell it and donate the money to charity. As people have said in the past, ill–gotten gains should not be kept. Hazel may have willingly given it to you, but we both know how you really ended up with it. 

“To avoid any future consequences for either of us, it is best to sell the necklace and donate the money to a good cause.”
