Leah sustained broken bones in her leg from the fall, but she held her tears.
When her son-in-law arrived, she finally broke down as she saw him exuding vengeance on her behalf.
Leah didn't have a son, and even her daughter was adopted.
Thus, she had always wanted a son who loved her, as she longed to be a part of a strong bond between a mother and her son.
As Leah gazed upon Nathan's fury on her behalf, she felt a warm fuzzy feeling in her heart. It was then when she finally understood and experienced the emotional bond she yearned for.
When Nathan saw his mother-in-law in tears, he and Colin hurriedly helped her up. “Mom, how are you? Is it serious? Colin, call her an ambulance right now.”
“Yes, sir!” Colin said.
Leah shook her head. “It hurts but nothing too serious,” she said. “Don't worry about it too much. I'm glad just to see you.”
Right then, Mrs. Shulz's shrill voice invaded his eardrums like the crash of cymbals. “Hey, brat, did you hear that? Your bloody mother said she's fine. How dare you approach my son head-on like that? Are you trying to frighten him?”
At the sound of her voice, Nathan's face grew even grimmer.
Turning to stare coldly at them, he said, “You didn't care about your son pushing my mother or about assaulting someone.
“But when I rushed towards you, you were afraid that your child would be scared?
“Do you think the world revolves around you and your family?”
Mrs. Shulz pursed her lips. “I'm not wasting any more time talking to you. I'm leaving with my son. If there isn't anything else, get out of my way.
As soon as she said that, Nathan's hand reached out in a swift motion.
Smack!
The power behind his slap was so immense that Mrs. Shulz spat a mouthful of blood. Her face appeared distorted from the swelling of her cheeks.
This smack had completely rattled the stout
woman.
Even Leah, Liliana, and the crowd surrounding them were shocked.
“How dare he!” Shangley shouted. “Harassing my wife and son on my territory? Hang in there. I'm on my way right now.”
Not long after, an Audi, two large Passats, and three governmental cars arrived hotly to the scene. The cars raced all the way across the park and screeched to a halt in front of Nathan.
A middle-aged man with spectacles of titaniumgold emerged, flanked by six or seven men.
He was the director of the Park Maintenance Department, Shangley Shulz. The rest were his chauffer and some subordinates.
“You're finally here.” Mrs. Shulz wept and threw herself into her husband's arms.
Shangley roared, “Who was the scoundrel that drove my wife to tears? Show yourself!”
“You're Shangley Shulz?” Nathan asked in amusement.
Shangley detached himself from his wife and walked over to face Nathan. As Shangley stared at him up and down, he concluded from Nathan's simple dressing that he was a mere low-class citizen who did not know his place within the hierarchy.
“That's right. I'm Shangley Shulz,” he replied. “You'd better have a good reason for hitting my wife, or else I wouldn't be letting you off the hook.”
