Tracker

I follow Raptor out of the dining hall and into a private area where we can talk. He looks around, making sure we’re alone before turning back to me.

He scrubs his hands over his face. “I couldn’t have found you at a worse possible time. I can’t stay, not right now.”

“I know. You’re in the middle of an operation, an operation you’re running,” I say to him. I do work for all of the elite warriors, tracking down the people they’re looking for so they don’t waste time hunting for someone who has already moved. Raptor was promoted to his position two years ago and runs a very effective team.

He sighs and looks at me. “I’m Kit, codename Raptor. You probably don’t have your codename yet,” he says. He must think I’m a first year.

“I know who you are, Raptor. I’m Tracker,” I say and smile at the stunned look on his face.

“You’re Tracker?”

I raise an eyebrow. “You were expecting a man, perhaps?”

“No. Well, yes. But I was expecting someone … geeky. Not some gorgeous woman who looks like she just stepped off a movie set. What’s your real name?”

“Jaelynn,” I say. He begins purring. The sound is completely at odds with the powerful, masculine aura that he gives off. This is an Alpha male who is used to being in control, but so am I. 1

He steps forward and strokes his knuckles over my cheek. “I have to go. Will you be in court on Monday? I know your team was responsible for bringing this information to the Council.”

“I’ll be there.”

“So will I. Can you take a couple of days off? We could get to know each other and talk about how we can make this work,” he says.

“I’ll make it happen,” I tell him.

He nods, then leans down and presses his lips to mine. Much too soon, he pulls away, growling angrily. “Dammit, I wish I could stay.”

“But you can’t, and I understand that,” I tell him. I don’t like it either, but I also know that I need to prepare for Monday and make sure that Sphinx is prepared for Monday as well.

“Here, let me give you my number,” he says quickly.

I raise an eyebrow at him again. “I can get your number.”

He grins at me. “Of course you can. Text me. I’ll be waiting to hear from you.”

“See you Monday,” I say as he steps back.

“Count on it.”

The moment he’s gone, I feel like I can breathe again. Holy shit that man is intense. The thought of him having that same level of intensity in the bedroom sends shivers down my spine.

“What was that about?” Hijack asks, walking up.

“Raptor is my mate,” I say, still staring in the direction he walked off.

“What does that mean?” he asks. I know what he’s asking. What does that mean for our tech team. We’ve built a strong team, the three of us. Sphinx will only add to that when she joins the team next year.

“I don’t know yet. I’m going to get Sphinx ready for Monday and then I’m taking a couple of days off. Raptor will be in court and we’re going to spend some time together to figure things out. What I do know is that I’m not ready to quit the Academy yet,” I say, turning to look at him.

“If the two of you decide to complete your bond, go to the Council. They’ll make accommodations for the two of you so you can continue working for them. I know you’re too important for them to lose and it looks like he’s too important for them to lose too.”

“Thanks, Hijack.”

“No problem and congratulations. Having a tough warrior for a mate is exciting,” he says, grinning.

“Is that what you’re hoping for?” I ask him. We don’t often get personal about our lives, but it’s impossible to not get close with the work we do. I’m sure it’s the same for Raptor and his group.

“I wouldn’t mind having a strong woman who could hold her own against me in a fight,” he says, smiling.

“Is that why you and Hacker are constantly measuring dicks over Sphinx?” I ask, making him laugh. Hijack doesn’t laugh very often, and with very few people. I count myself among that very small number of individuals. Our trio is a close, tight-knit group.

“Is that what we’re doing?” he asks.

“Isn’t it? I don’t care as long as it doesn’t scare her off or break up our team. If it becomes a problem, I will step in,” I say to him.

“It won’t. Are you ready for Monday?” he asks.

“I will be. You? You’re set with where the line ended with Sphinx and started with you?” I ask, making sure we don’t set her up to fail.

“I’ve made sure nothing will fall back on her.”

“Good. Let’s meet tomorrow night, just to make sure we’re all set,” I say.

“Sounds like a plan.”

We say goodbye and on my way to my room, I do a quick search finding Raptor’s number. Then I send him a text.
