Chapter 218: Those Pillows Were Gone Now
Angela Poy
I stared at her, struggling to process what I was hearing. “You’re moving back to New York? But don’t you prefer living in Europe?”
Victoria waved her hand dismissively, as if relocating across continents was as simple as changing dinner plans. “What nonsense are you talking about? Alexander and 1 are getting older–what matters ow is family. We have two beautiful grandchildren we barely know. Everything else is secondary.”
She reached across the dining table to refill Aria’s glass with fresh juice.
“Besides, New York is an excellent environment for Aria and Ethan to grow up in.
And didn’t you establish your own investment company here? If you have any questions, feel free to ask Alexander–he’ll help you develop your business properly. As for the children, we’ll take excellent care of them when you’re working.”
With that, Victoria excused herself to discuss relocation plans with Alexander and check on the children’s sleeping arrangements.
I made my way back to our bedroom–Sean’s and mine–my mind spinning with disbelief.
The Shaw family was completely rearranging their lives around us. Despite my investment firm’s success, it was nothing compared to the Shaw Group’s empire. Yet here they were, abandoning their preferred lifestyle in Europe to support me and the children.
The bedroom door swung open with familiar resistance. Everything remained exactly as I remembered–the antique Parisian dresser, the custom–made chaise lounge by the window, even the cream–colored curtains that Sean had insisted on because they reminded him of my complexion in morning light.
I approached the massive king–sized bed tentatively, reaching out to touch the silk comforter. Five years ago, there had always been a thick wall of pillows dividing us, especially during our worst arguments.
Those pillows were gone now.
My phone buzzed with a text from Sean: Are you finished for the evening?
I replied: Yes, just got back to my room. Then, after a moment’s hesitation: How was your day?
Instead of texting back, Sean initiated a video call. I debated whether to answer, then relented, accepting the call with slightly trembling fingers.
His face appeared on the screen, tired but alert. He noticed my surroundings immediately.
“You’re in our bedroom?” His voice carried a surprised intimacy that made my chest tighten.
I glanced away, oddly self–conscious, as if I’d been caught doing something I shouldn’t.
Why should I feel guilty?
This was as much my bedroom as his. Yet some part of me felt I shouldn’t have returned so easily to this space we once shared.
Sean sensed my discomfort and smoothly changed the subject. “Are Aria and Ethan asleep?”
“Your parents have completely won them over,” I said, grateful for the shift in focus. “Aria hasn’t stopped talking about ‘Grandma and Grandpa‘ all evening.”

Chapter 218: Those Pillows Were Gone Now
A companionable silence fell between us, filled with everything we went beying i found myself staffing kéo tra screen, noting the shadows under his eyes.
“About David, Sean finally said, ‘don’t worry too much. We havent rated him yet, he is te verd let you know the moment I have news.”
He must have noticed my exhaustion-# yawn I couldn’t suppress z ma
“You should get ready for bed,” he said gently. “You look tired::
I nodded, another yawn confirming his observation. I am tired. It’s en… overwhelming
“Before you go,” Sean said quickly, “would you mind turning the camera around? i’d like to see the room?
The request struck me as oddly vulnerable. I complied without proter, slowly panning the camera across one thared spac
“Thank you,” he said when I turned the camera back to myself. It feels familiar, I miss it.”
The ache in his voice–what he was really saying–wasn’t lost on me,
After ending the call, I lay in the soft bed that had once been ours, thinking the memories would remain at bay
I was wrong.
They returned with unexpected force–warm hands sliding across my skin in darkness, whispered conversations deep into the laughter and tears and everything in between.
I drifted to sleep wondering if Sean was thinking of the same moments, alone in his European hotel room.
“Mom, you’ve been sleeping forever!”
Ethan’s voice pulled me from a deep, dreamless sleep. I blinked awake, disoriented, to find sunshine flooding the room and my son peering at me with exasperated affection.
“What time is it?” I mumbled, reaching for my phone.
“Past ten,” Ethan informed me. “Grandma made breakfast hours ago.
I sat up, embarrassed. “I didn’t set an alarm. I never sleep this late.
Ethan shrugged, untroubled by my lapse. “Grandma said we should let you rest. She can have your breakfast sent up if you want.”
“No, no,” I swung my legs over the side of the bed. “Tell her I’ll be down shortly. I just need to get dressed.”
Downstairs, I found Aria perched on Victoria’s lap, a delicate princess necklace glittering around her small neck.
“Where did that come from?” I asked, joining them at the table.
Aria’s face lit up. “Grandma gave it to me! Isn’t it pretty?”
I raised an eyebrow at Victoria, who merely smiled. “Did you thank her properly?”
“Of course I did, Mommy!” Aria looked scandalized that I would even question her manners.
