The blizzard was in full swing. The cabin often creaked against the strong winds and I even feared that a window would cave in and smash. But the cabin was sturdy and held well in the wind.
The snow was falling hard. I was sure that by the morning, it would be too deep to walk in. The temperature had dropped wildly, and it was below freezing outside. But Ezra had lit the fire in the living room and the cabin was warm and toasty.
I sat with Ezra and Jenny at the dining table and we began to eat. They were both quiet at first, exchanging glances with each other. Then, Ezra cleared his throat.
"Princess, did you speak to Liam today?" Ezra asked me. I shook my head at him, starting to eat my soup. The smells swirled around the room and my belly rumbled.
Being angry at Liam was draining. We weren't arguing but the angry and upset feelings toward him were draining enough. My chest hurt and my head was spinning.
The bond ached and throbbed. It begged for us to be together.
Damn pull.
"No," I replied angrily. I was still angry at Liam for lying to me. I had told Ezra and Jenny all about what had happened in Liam's office. They were both genuinely shocked at the fact that Liam had lied to me like he did.
I had ignored Liam for the rest of the day. When Liam got back to his cabin after finishing his work, I left. I didn't even look at him or acknowledge him. I avoided eye contact and then walked straight out. When he showed up later on, I told Ezra to tell him I was sleeping.
I hadn't spoken to Liam at all and I wasn't planning on it until the next day.
"He keeps bothering me about it," Ezra told me. I shrugged and swirled my soup. Jenny had made it but I wasn't in the mood for eating delicious food. Which was a first.
"Well that's his problem, isn't it?" I muttered. I rubbed my eyes. Something felt off and I didn't like it.
"I know you're mad at him but you should really speak to him tonight," Ezra told me. Jenny scoffed at this.
"Bullshit. He messed up. He can pay the consequences of being a shitty mate," Jenny snapped. I nodded my head in agreement with her. Liam was acting strange and it started the moment we arrived back in Takiani.
"Jen, come on babe. She needs to talk to him. Neither of them will get a good sleep if they don't," Ezra pleaded. He gave Jenny a look in which she rolled her eyes at.
"I'm not saying anything. I think he should suffer a night without the girl that adores him," Jenny said before continuing to eat. I nodded again and Ezra deeply sighed as he sat back in his seat.
"You two are a damn pain in my ass," Ezra said as he shook his head. Silence followed and then Ezra threw his arms up and left the table. He stormed down the hallway and I heard his bedroom door slam shut.
"I love Liam, Ali. Don't get me wrong. But he has his head up his ass. He needs to get a grip and figure out what's important to him before he loses it," Jenny sighed and shook her head. I nodded at her and we ate in silence.
My stomach started to twist painfully as time passed. Finally, I got up and decided to head to bed. I said goodnight to Jenny and then left the room. I headed to my bedroom and shut the door.
Sighing, I walked over to the window to make sure it was locked shut. I didn't need it to blow open in the night and have snow flying through.
I glanced outside and frowned at what I saw.
Huddled against a thick tree about five metres from the cabin was a child. One I didn't recognise. One who looked scared.
"What the hell?" I muttered to myself as I spun around and ran out my room. Jenny shouted to me as I ran past her and outside into the blizzard. I struggled to hold my ground as I sprinted towards the tree that I saw the child huddled under.
He was hugging the tree tightly, crying. The closer I got, the louder his sobs were. His clothes were ripped and dirty. He looked like he hadn't showered in days.
He must've been lost.
I got closer and then I smelt it.
I growled to myself as I got closer. The child was a rogue. I was about to save a damn rogue.
I grabbed the kid and pulled him away from the tree. He followed without struggle as I tugged him back to the cabin where Jenny was standing on the porch. Her eyes widened when she noticed the child I was pulling along.
"Alison, what the hell?" She muttered to me as I pulled the child inside. He had stopped crying now and was staring up at Jenny and I curiously.
The child was undoubtedly a rogue. His blood smelt strongly of rot. I wanted to gag as I pulled the child through the house and into the living room. I pushed him to stand in front of the fire and then grabbed a blanket for him.
"What the hell is going on?" Ezra ran into the room. He looked from me and Jenny to the child sitting on our living room floor. His eyes widened with shock.
"Call Henry over here, immediately," Ezra breathed out in shock. Jenny nodded and raced off to the kitchen to make the call.
Ezra followed and I assumed that I was being left with the child. I walked slowly closer to him. My mind was racing with a million thoughts a minute. I had no idea how a little kid had made it this far without being seriously injured.
The child looked about five or so. He was only small and very young. Already, he was dying. He was dangerously skinny and looked pale and sick. I felt bad for the kid. He probably didn't have a choice about being a rogue. His parents would have ruined his life for him.
"What's your name?" He asked me. I crouched down in front of him as he sat in front of the fire. He had wrapped the blanket around him tightly to keep him warm.
"Alison. What's yours?" I tilted my head at him. The boy smiled at me. His eyes seemed to light up.
"I'm Benny and I'm five! That's this many," Benny said, holding up a hand. He showed me five fingers and I smiled at him as I nodded.
"That's really good Benny. Can you tell me what you were doing out here all by yourself?" I asked him. Benny frowned at me and looked around. He seemed confused.
