“What did you say?” Xanthe was shocked to hear such disgusting words from Lucy. Lucy had always been by her side, almost like a sister. Xanthe had always shared good things with Lucy, only to find out it was all a show for money. 

That sisterly bond was just a lie for her own gain. Seeing Xanthe hurt actually satisfied Lucy, as if the truth was finally out. After feeling so oppressed for years, Lucy had been waiting for this chance. 

Lucy said, “Xanthe, who do you think you are? If it weren’t for your money and my parents pushing me to be nice to you, I wouldn’t put up with you! 

“Do you think I’m the only one who feels this way? Your so–called friends, Yvette and Berry, and even Shakira… what’s the difference?” 

Xanthe’s fists tightened, and she growled, “Shut up! Shakira isn’t like you, greedy scum!” 

But Lucy just laughed louder. “Xanthe, the truth hurts! With your personality, you can’t have real friends!” 

Angered by Lucy’s mockery, Xanthe stepped closer and slapped her hard. “How dare you hit me, Xanthe-” Lucy jumped up, ready to fight back. 

Lucy was no match for Xanthe, though, who quickly slapped her down. With her palm stinging, Xanthe looked down at Lucy with cold disdain. “Save your sob story. Don’t blame your parents for your failures. You’ve used me! 

“If you had any dignity, you’d return what you took from me. But you only think about showing off. You’re just pathetic. “From now on, our bond is over. Don’t ask me for anything; I refuse to acknowledge a cousin who’s so ungrateful!” Xanthe turned and left, firm in her decision. 

At the staircase, Jackson and Odalyn were eavesdropping. Seeing Xanthe leave, they rushed to her with fake smiles. 

“What happened, Xanthe? Did Lucy upset you? I’ll teach her a lesson!” Jackson said. 

“I’ll go in and demand an apology from her!” Odalyn added. 

Xanthe looked at the couple and felt a wave of self–mockery. Lucy was draining her money. Jackson and Odalyn were ‘draining her father’s money. It hurt to see her father was eager to help them. 

“I have no problem with Lucy. It’s late, so I’ll be going,” Xanthe said, ignoring them and walking away. 

The couple smiled as they waved her off, then hurried to Lucy’s room. Lucy lay on the bed, her face swollen. Jackson and Odalyn were shocked. “Did Xanthe do that?” 

Lucy cried out, “Yes! You have to punish her!” 

Jackson responded, “Why would we get involved in this?” 

Odalyn said, “Be nice to Xanthe. We can’t compete with her family! If you want money, trips, and luxury items, you need to be friendly and gain benefits from her. Why can’t you see the importance of humility?” 

Lucy sobbed, “But she hit me!” 

Jackson firmly said, “Didn’t you provoke her? You need to stay low for a bit. Then apologize.” 

But Lucy stubbornly refused to admit her wrongs. She was too afraid to tell her parents that she had just had a big argument with Xanthe. “I won’t! I’m not saying sorry!” 

“You’re defying me? You need a lesson!” Jackson said, raising his hand.

Odalyn intervened, “Stop! She’s upset. Let her think it over. She need to reconcile when she runs out of money.” 

Jackson cursed. “It’s shameful–wanting benefits and acting tough. How did I raise such a foolish kid?”

Odalyn replied, “She’s known comfort her whole life. She’ll learn soon!” As Jackson grumbled, Odalyn led him away. 

Once the door closed, Lucy sat quietly, tears streaming down her face. She thought, ‘My parents think I only rely on Xanthe and can’t succeed alone. Xanthe felt the same. If Xanthe won’t let me thrive, then I’ll make her comforts insecure!‘ 

Walking down the street, Xanthe felt completely lost. She thought, ‘Why does it keep happening–with Yvette, Berry, and even Lucy, who has been close to me since childhood?‘ 

Xanthe had always treated them kindly and wondered why they only used her for their gain. She wondered, ‘Is finding a real friend impossible?‘ 

Her head was full of thoughts as she noticed two girls in uniforms. They were sharing ice cream and laughing together.
