Chapter 630: Side Story 1. The Twilight Zone - 12

Bassena was standing near the head of the examination bed, so he couldn’t see Zein’s face right away. But the guide hadn’t been moving or reacting at all, eyes only looking at the monitor facing them.

What is this? Is he not happy? As expected, is it too much for him to have twin boys? Are they reminding him of his little brothers?

All kinds of questions full of worry swirled in Bassena’s mind, but the answer could only come by direct inquiry. Swallowing nervously, Bassena held the guide’s shoulder and carefully tried to look at that pretty face. "Z-Zein? Are you al--"

"Twins..." the guide, who finally got out of his daze, muttered. He turned his head toward Bassena and stretched his lips wide. "We have twins!"

A pair of sparkling blue eyes, blush spreading across lifted cheeks, and a smile...a smile so radiant Bassena’s heart stopped for a second, before beating increasingly fast from how beautiful that face was. Bassena had no idea that his already pretty fiance could become even more beautiful, splendid, ethereal...

Wait--this wasn’t the time for that.

"Oh..." Bassena opened his mouth dumbly. "Yeah..."

"Haha!"

Despite the obviously dumb look on his fiance’s face, Zein was laughing lightheartedly. Even the nurses were blushing, feeling the room got brighter suddenly. The small laughter sounded like a melodious ring of a bell, clear and soothing.

And not at all what Bassena expected.

He had thought that having twins would traumatize Zein, or at least make him sad. Knowing the guide, it might seem like a cruel twist of fate. Honestly, Zein would have thought so if it wasn’t for the vision and the dream he had.

The vision of talking with his grown-up brothers, and a dream he suddenly remembered.

It was a dream he had on a flight to the Southern Kingdom. A vague dream about two figures with eyes that resembled Zein and Bassena. He had no idea what that dream was about before, but it appeared from time to time, almost like Bassena’s house on a cliff. And now, he finally realized what that dream was about.

Must have been from their future sons, right?

It was remembering that dream that made Zein lay there wordlessly until Bassena got worried.

The Doctor chuckled at both Bassena’s dumbfounded face and Zein’s uncharacteristic wide smile. "I’m glad that it’s a welcomed piece of news, but--" she pointed at Zein with the ultrasound wand as a nurse wiped the excess gel off Zein’s stomach. "You’ll have to take care of yourself even better from now on. Twins in male guides are usually small since they have smaller wombs than women."

"Ah, I see," Zein nodded. The smile had gone from his face as he returned to his serious mode. Bassena also stopped being stunned and reflexively straightened his back while raising his hand, ready to take a note in his commlink.

"It doesn’t mean they’ll be more fragile, but having two fetuses means you have two extra people in your body, so caution is a must."

"I understand!" Bassena nodded seriously, although the warning was pointed at Zein.

"Pfft--yes, we understand."

The Doctor chuckled again. "But well, don’t get nervous or stressed out because of it, since stress is bad for the babies. That being said..."

"Yes?" Zein, who was in the middle of getting out of the examination bed, paused.

"W-what’s wrong?"

"It’s not always the case, but..." the Doctor smiled. "The hormonal effect might be...quite severe--especially since this is also your first pregnancy."

"Ah..."

"No worries!" Bassena clenched his fist in the air. "I’m ready for anything. I’ll do anything!"

Zein exchanged a glance with the Doctor and the nurses, before chuckling at the enthusiastic esper. Despite being terrified at first, Bassena’s tenacity truly shone at a time like this.

No--rather, it was good that Bassena was scared. He was cautious of everything. Zein got stuffy at how protective Bassena became, but it also meant the guide always had regular meals guaranteed, and the esper would run even to the Western Republic if he needed to, fetching some snacks or whatever that Zein wanted.

All kinds of medicines and magical supplements were available at home, and Bassena always filled the fridge with the best ingredients. Zein couldn’t even trip since Bassena’s instinct worked so well through their bond, and a slight stumble would make the esper teleport to his side right away, ready to catch him.

Anyway, an overprotective partner would always be better than an ignorant one.

"Hearing that from A Saint class esper is truly reassuring," the Doctor laughed before ending their session with a few more pieces of advice that Bassena immediately took note of.

When they left the examination room, the couple visibly looked brighter than when they came. Their steps even got lighter, and Zein was smiling easily. It was good that they always came and went through the emergency stairs to avoid other people, or someone would already snap a picture or two.

Even Bassena was tempted to take one. In fact, he was about to when Zein’s happy smile turned into a smirk. "Why?"
