Jessica knelt by the toilet, retching miserably, when Brian’s creamy corn soup suddenly came to mind.

After finishing the breakfast Brian had brought over, Jessica did something out of character. She texted Brian: [I want mushroom soup for lunch.j

When Brian saw the message, he wondered if Jessica had sent it to the wrong person. He was so thrilled that he left work early at noon and went to the supermarket himself to buy fresh mushrooms.

Madeline had been keeping tabs on Brian’s every move. Watching him neglect his work for Jessica, she cursed Jessica in her mind for being so manipulative.

Unfortunately, Madeline didn’t dare follow him back to Atkinson Villa, especially during her work hours.

Right on schedule, Brian’s thermos containers arrived shortly after noon.

One of the containers held cream of mushroom soup, with delicate swirls of cream floating on the surface.

Jessica caught a whiff of the aroma. After throwing up from morning sickness earlier, her stomach now rumbled with hunger.

She ladled out a bowl of soup. Despite the mushroom soup being even richer than chicken soup, Jessica found it surp feeling queasy at all.

“Jessi, you should head back-” Dereck pushed open the door and saw Jessica already eating. He waved his hand dismissively. “Alright then, I’ll head home first. Make sure you take a nap after lunch. Don’t worry about work stuff; I’ll handle it.”

“Dad, I-” Before she could finish, Dereck had already left. He came suddenly and left just as abruptly, not giving her a chance to say anything.

Jessica shook her head. With Dereck handling the paperwork, things were indeed much easier for her.

After finishing her meal, she stood by the floor–to–ceiling windows for a while. The sunshine outside was pleasant and warm.

The warmth made her drowsy, so Jessica covered herself with her jacket and settled on the inner sofa for a quick nap.

“I hate you, Mommy! Maddie is my real mommy! I don’t want you anymore!” Jacob stood protectively in front of Madeline, picking up toys from the floor and throwing them at Jessica. “Go away! Go away! My mommy is Maddie!”

“Jessi, do you see this? Jake wants me to be his mommy. Why don’t you just get lost!” Madeline laughed triumphantly from behind Jacob.

“No, no, this can’t be happening!” Jessica tried to rush toward them but couldn’t reach them no matter how hard she tried.

She cried and begged desperately. “Jake, I carried you for nine months and gave birth to you. Maddie, you’re my best friend. You can’t do this to me!” Jessica begged them not to betray her. The next second, another figure appeared.

Brian came up from behind and wrapped his arms around Madeline and Jacob, looking like a real family of three. They looked at Jessica with cold disgust. “Jessica, both Jake and I prefer Maddie. Don’t you get it? Can’t you just leave on your own?”

“No! You can’t do this!” Jessica desperately reached out toward them, but Jacob just kept throwing things at her while Brian shielded Madeline, not even glancing in Jessica’s direction.
