“How’s Jacob doing with his studies?” Jessica asked casually while eating the egg Brian had peeled for her.

Brian paused, his emotions stirring. It was the first time in nearly a month since Jessica had left Atkinson Villa that she’d asked about Jacob, even if it was just about his schoolwork.

Brian’s mind raced. ‘Does this mean all my efforts these past few days, bringing her meals and showing I care, are finally softening her heart?”

“Jake is-” Brian started to say Jacob was studying harder but stopped himself, worried Jessica might misunderstand.

After all, when Jessica had been strict about Jacob’s studies before, the boy had only resisted more, refusing to do his homework properly and even running off to the amusement park with Madeline.

“His grades are fine. He’s working hard and staying focused, but he really misses you,” Brian said instead.

Jessica fell silent and finished her breakfast without another word.

Brian was content just hearing Jessica ask about Jacob. He didn’t push his luck by trying to put in more good words for Jacob.

Jessica had wanted to ask about Jacob’s overall well–being, but then remembered he often visited Grant Manor. He was probably doing fine in general.

After finishing her meal, Jessica returned to Grant Group. Brian watched until her figure disappeared from view before heading back to his own company.

“Good morning, Mr. Atkinson.” Madeline greeted.

“Morning,” Brian replied cheerfully as they crossed paths in the hallway.

Madeline froze for a moment, her heart leaping with joy. Brian had actually said good morning to her.

She followed Brian down the hallway, clutching a folder to her chest while stealing glances at his back. Her eyes held a hidden affection that she carefully concealed. Something about the way he walked today, the lightness in his step, told her he was in an exceptionally good mood.

She followed him all the way into the office. Brian casually pulled a plastic bag from his pocket.

Earlier, after peeling eggs for Jessica and about to throw away the shells, she’d suddenly brought up Jacob. Distracted, Brian had absentmindedly stuffed the shells into his pocket.

Brian tossed the bag into the trash can.

“Yes, her appetite has gotten better.” Brian’s eyes softened when he spoke about Jessica.
