Madeline felt a surge of satisfaction watching Jacob’s face fall at her words. She reached out and ruffled his hair gently. “Jake, how about I take you to the amusement park tonight? We haven’t been there in forever.”

Jacob’s eyes lit up at the suggestion, but then he glanced back toward where Jessica had gone. He still wanted to make things right with her.

“Don’t worry about that. Maddie will put in a good word for you with Jessi,” Madeline reassured hirn, “Jake is such a good boy. What mother wouldn’t love such a sweet baby?” She continued planting seeds of doubt about Jessica in Jacob’s mind.

“Thanks, Maddie! You’ll remember to pick me up after school, right?”

Madeline handed Jacob another bag of pastries to share with his friends.

Jacob waved goodbye cheerfully and bounded off.

Madeline watched until his small figure disappeared completely, then her smile vanished instantly.

She turned and climbed into her car parked at the curb. Settling into the driver’s seat, she picked up a lemon scone and took a bite. It really was delicious, especially fresh from the oven. The lemon scone was still warm.

After finishing the whole piece, she rolled down her window, worried about gaining weight.

She called out to a street cleaner working nearby. “Ma’am! Ma’am!”

The cleaner looked up and walked over. “You calling me?”

“Thanks for your hard work. Here, take these,” Madeline said with a smile, handing over the remaining lemon scones.

Before the woman could thank her, she hit the gas and drove off.

“Give them to Jessica?” Madeline sneered. If it weren’t such a waste to throw away the lemon scones, Madeline wouldn’t even give them to the street

cleaners.

Madeline drove quickly to the Grant Group building. The tower soared into the sky, so tall she had to crane her neck just to glimpse the top floor.

This massive corporation belonged to Jessica. Every company and brand under the Grant Group umbrella was

something Madeline coveted desperately.

It was wealth she could never earn in one lifetime. No, not even in ten lifetimes. Yet Jessica had been born into it all.

Madeline stood at the entrance, staring up at the towering structure for a long time.

The sun blazed down, making her dizzy, and she finally lowered her head.

“Jessica, I won’t lose to you,” Madeline whispered. “When I marry Brian and become his wife, I’ll have everything I want. And everything you have now.” Her eyes reddened at the corners, gleaming with twisted ambition,

She didn’t just want to steal Brian and Jacob from Jessica. She even fantasized about taking over the Grant Group through whatever means necessary.

Madeline took a deep breath; lost in a twisted fantasy of stripping Jessica of everything she had. Her face glowed with the kind of manic euphoria of someone high on drugs.

She would replace Jessica. She would take her place completely.

After lingering in her delusions for a while, Madeline snapped back to reality. A smile eerily similar to Jessica’s crossed her lace, and her every gesture now mirrored Jessica’s mannerisms.

She pulled out her phone and dialed Jessica’s number while walking into the Grant Group building
