“Pregnant women tend to have mood swings. Please bear with her,” Stella said.

Though Stella was puzzled by her daughter’s sudden change in attitude, she still felt heartbroken.

Brian remained calm and said, “No need to apologize. This is my duty. Since Jessi doesn’t want to see me today, that’s okay. I’ll come back tomorrow.”

As he spoke, he respectfully offered the thermal food container with both hands.

“I made this myself. Could you please persuade Jessi to have just a little? Thanks.”

As he spoke, Brian looked earnestly into Stella’s eyes.

Unable to refuse, Stella had no choice but to accept it.

Relieved, Brian took his leave.

Stella watched his lonely figure retreat into the distance and couldn’t help but sigh, her heart heavy with resignation.

‘What a mess this is,‘ she whispered inwardly.

That night, after finishing her manuscript, Jessica finally felt the pangs of hunger. She got up and headed downstairs to the kitchen, only to find a pot of soup gently simmering on the stove, as if waiting for her.

The perfectly savory aroma of the meat was simply irresistible, making her mouth water instantly. Without a second thought, she eagerly ladled out a bowl and began to eat.

Stella walked in and asked warmly, “Jessi, what are you eating there?”

After finishing her skincare routine, Stella came out and noticed the dining room lights were still on. Stepping inside, she saw her daughter happily devouring a bowl of food, which piqued her curiosity.

Jessi said, “That soup simmering on the stove is amazing! How did you make it, Mom? Please make me another batch tomorrow.”

She didn’t even look up from her bowl.

Honestly, she was pretty hungry.

Upon hearing this, Stella hesitated, her face betraying a visible inner struggle.

Stella said, “Oh, the soup? I didn’t make that. Brian dropped it off this evening.”

Jessica’s hand trembled, and the spoon slipped from her grasp, splashing creamy soup across the table.

“From him?” Her voice trembled slightly.

‘Of course, Jessica thought, ‘I should have known. That distinctive flavor? Who else could have made it but Brian?‘

For a moment, Jessica’s feelings grew complicated.

She couldn’t figure out what Brian was up to–flirting with Madeline one moment, then meticulously preparing her meals the next. Seriously, v. master of time management.

Stella took a seat beside her daughter and, noticing she had stopped eating, couldn’t help but frown.

“You’re full already? Listen, just because you’re young doesn’t mean you can take your health lightly. No matter what’s going on, don’t mess with your wellbeing.”

As she spoke, she filled another bowl of soup for Jessica.

Jéssica hesitated briefly before accepting the soup bowl, though her words told a different story.

Jessica said firmly, “Tell him not to send anything next time. I don’t need it.”

She truly didn’t want to keep being entangled with Brian like this.

“Alright, whatever you say,” Stella replied.

Stella didn’t speak up for Brian at all. Jessica’s wishes always came first.
