Caught off guard by Jessica, Brian’s eyes widened sharply as he instinctively turned to flee.

“Freeze!” Jessica snapped.

She sprang up, flicked on the light, and locked her piercing gaze on Brian, who stood rooted to the spot by her command.

“Is this fun for you, Brian?”

Brian knew he’d been exposed and let out a silent sigh.

“Jessi, when did you realize I was out here?” Brian asked uneasily.

“During dinner. What exactly are you trying to do? Spit it out,” Jessica demanded, cutting straight to the point.

“What if I told you I just want to take care of you–nothing more? Would you believe me?”

Brian gazed at her, his eyes full of sincerity.

Jessica turned her head away from his gaze. After a few seconds, she said coolly, “I don’t need your care. My mom can look after me. If not, I have friends. And if all else fails, I can always hire a nurse. Your care isn’t necessary for me.”

There was a time when she’d call Brian even while sick, her heart full of hope.

She had even hoped Brian would actually come take care of her. All she wanted was for him to make a little time to be with her.

But every time, all she got in return was either, “If you’re sick, go see a doctor. What’s the point of telling me?” or, “I’m busy. Don’t call me unless it’s urgent.”

Other times, all she got was that cold, endless busy signal, or his secretary’s standard reply. “Mr. Atkinson is occupied. Please leave a message.”

And after Madeline showed up, it cut even deeper.

One moment, Brian claimed he was swamped with work and couldn’t even spare a minute to pick up Jake when she had a bad cold. The next moment, he’d take Jake to a family amusement park with Madeline.

That night, Jessica came home to find her friend hadn’t managed to pick up Jacob. Frantic, she removed my IV drip and searched for hours with no luck, nearly collapsing from exhaustion and worry. But all Brian said was, “What a downer.”

Recalling each and every incident now, Jessica felt her heart grow cold.

“Brian, there’s no going back for us anymore.”

There were simply too many cracks between them; so many that Jessica no longer wanted to mend them, nor did she even know where to begin. All she wanted was to escape.

Brian fell silent.

Jessica snapped, “So, you want to give me the silent treatment again? Fine, I can play that game too-” Her words were cut off by a sudden cough.

“Jessi!”

Brian quickly started patting her back, his technique surprisingly skilled and gentle, so much so that Jessica almost found herself relaxing into his touch

But she quickly came to her senses, pushed him away, and said firmly, “Stay away from me.”

She couldn’t let herself rely on Brian anymore.

With a resigned sigh, Brian complied by keeping his distance, though he didn’t leave. Instead, he turned to pour her a glass of water, carefully checking the temperature before gently holding it to Jessica’s lips.

“Come on, have some water. We can talk about everything else when you’re feeling better, alright?” Brian coaxed softly.
