Jessica shook her head with a faint smile.

Gabriela’s company had truly lifted her spirits.

The next day, it wasn’t until evening that Gabriela finally finished work and rushed to the hospital.

As soon as she saw Jessica, Gabriela couldn’t help but complain, “Ugh, today nearly killed me! Jessi, you have to get better soon and come rescue me.”

No sooner had she spoken than a clear, childish voice piped up from the corner.

“What’s that? Can I help? Ms. Clark, please don’t make Mommy do any work, okay?” the child chimed in.

Gabriela turned, surprised, to find Jacob–who had somehow slipped in unnoticed–sitting obediently on a stool, his face full of eager anticipation as he gazed at her.

When she realized it was Jacob who had spoken, Gabriela blurted out, “What are you doing here, you little traitor?”

She immediately pressed her lips together, realizing she might’ve been too harsh, but didn’t bother to take it back.

Honestly, who could blame her? This kid had always helped his shitty father bully Jessi, and even sided with the mistress.

If that was not being a traitor, what was?

When Jacob heard the words “little traitor,” his eyes instantly blazed with anger, and he was ready to retort. But one glance at Jessica’s expressionless face made all his defiance evaporate. He immediately fell silent, lowered his head, and buried his face in his arms.

Gabriela panicked a little, thinking she’d made Jacob cry.

“Uh, hey, don’t cry, okay? I didn’t mean to scold you; it just slipped out…” she stammered awkwardly.

Was this kid really that sensitive?

Jacob didn’t respond.

Gabriela shot Jessica a pleading look.

‘What are we supposed to do now? Quick, think of something! We can’t just let him cry here. What will the doctors and nurses think if they walk in?‘

Jessica gave her a reassuring look, then called out with a blank expression, “Jacob.”

“I’m here!” Jacob immediately looked up.

Without waiting for Jessica to say anything, he took the initiative to apologize to Gabriela.

“Ms. Clark, I wasn’t crying. My neck was just a little tired, so I wanted to rest for a bit.”

As he spoke, he quickly stood up and struggled to pull over a chair for Gabriela.

“Ms. Clark, please sit here and chat with Mom. I’ll go get some water for you.”

Without waiting for Gabriela to respond, he quickly grabbed the cups and turned away.

In less than a minute, he returned with two glasses of water.

“Mom, have some water.”
