Chapter 228
“Alright, Brian responded, his tone gentle as he lifted a forkful of food toward Jessica’s lips. “Eat.”
Jessica instinctively recoiled, but Brian cut her off before she could speak. “Jessi, you don’t want to spend the whole afternoon stuck here with me, de
you?”
Jessica fell silent. Brian’s tone made it clear he wasn’t joking. If she refused, he would keep her here all day. He had time to spare, but she still had responsibilities. “Give me the fork. I’ll eat it myself,” she finally conceded.
Brian exhaled in relief and handed over the fork. Part of him regretted missing the chance to feed her, but nothing mattered more than her well–being
Jessica was hungry. She dug in, finishing the meal with a hiccup of satisfaction.
A flicker of warmth lit Brian’s eyes.
“Open the door. I’m leav- Achoo!” Jessica grabbed the door handle, but she sneezed again.
Even the driver glanced back at the sound. “Mr. Atkinson, shall we head to the hospital?” He knew exactly how much Brian valued Jessica.
“No,” Jessica responded before Brian could speak.
“Fine. But you’re staying put,” Brian said, then hauled her away from the door in one swift motion.
“What are you doing?” Jessica struggled hard.
“Jessi, rest. You’re exhausted,” he murmured and pinned her firmly against his chest with his chin resting atop her head, his heart aching for her.
“Not your concern,” Jessica snapped.
The words stung, but Brian didn’t loosen his grip. “Just this once, Jessi. You can punish me however you want when you wake up.” With deliberate gentleness, he pressed his palm over her eyelids, forcing them shut. “Sleep.”
Jessica was fuming, yet she was utterly trapped in his arms.
The way Brian held her was maddeningly precise, enough to keep her from breaking free but never enough to cause discomfort.
Worried about the babies, Jessica didn’t push too hard. The standoff left her no choice but to relent.
Brian turned up the heat in the car and pulled out a blanket he had prepared earlier, gently wrapping it around her.
Exhaustion and frustration warred within her, but defiance gave way to resignation. Before long, she actually fell asleep.
Brian watched the tension lingering in her brows in sleep, his chest tightening. He stroked her back, lulling her into deeper sleep. Only when her breathing steadied did he pull out his phone and messaged Jackson: [Track Jessi’s movements over the past two days.]
Something was clearly off with Jessi. Brian suspected an external trigger, but asking Jessica directly was futile. He could only uncover the truth himself,
Jackson replied: [Right away, Mr. Atkinson.]
After seeing Jackson’s reply, Brian tossed his phone aside and leaned back, cradling Jessica as he shut his eyes to rest.
Jessica woke feeling oddly refreshed, instinctively stretching, only to freeze when her limbs met resistance. Her gaze snapped upward, locking Brian’s striking features inches away. Only then did she realize that she had fallen asleep in his arms.
“You’re awake. Feeling better?” Brian asked as his eyes fluttered open, warm with concern.
“How long was I asleep?” Ignoring his question, Jessica reached for her phone to check the time.
Chapter 228
Brian said, “An hour and a half Sleep more if you want. I cleared your schedule with… Mr. Grant.
Hearing his words, Jessica fell even more upset. She had spent most of last night sleepless, only to end up sleeping soundly in the arms of the ver person who had caused her turmoil.
She thought, ‘What kind of irony was this? Am I still dependent on Brian? No! That’s impossible.
Her expression darkened instantly. With a sharp push, she wrenched herself free from Brian’s embrace. “Open the door,” she snapped, her voice icy yanking at the door handle.
Brian quickly unlocked the doors, watching helplessly as Jessica stormed out without a backward glance. His shoulders slumped. He thought, Jessi what’s really going on with you?‘
Jessica still felt terrible when she returned to her office. A sliver of rationality whispered that she couldn’t afford to spiral like this, not anymore. Whether for the children’s sake or her own, she had to pull herself together.
The following day marked her scheduled appointment with Wesley. Jessica arrived as early as usual. “Good morning, Dr. Finch.”
Wesley took one look at her, who was pale and exhausted. He frowned, “Ms. Grant, have you been facing difficulties lately?”
“Yes. I’ve started having insomnia. I can’t go on like this. Do you have any solutions?” Jessica admitted, leaning back as Tres moved close. She pulled the
cat into her arms.
“Insomnia?” Wesley’s brow lifted in understanding. “How long has this lasted?”
“Two days.” Jessica lowered her gaze.
Wesley crossed his arms and asked softly, “I see. Might I ask… Did anything particularly stressful happen to you?”
Jessica remained silent. Clearly, she didn’t want to talk about it.
Wesley exhaled. “Ms. Grant, you’re making this rather difficult for me to help.”
