After Stella returned home, she told Dereck about Jessica’s plans. They looked at each other and sighed in unison.

“How did this happen?” Dereck frowned. He had thought Jessica would improve after the divorce, but she was getting worse.

“It’s all that brat Brian’s fault. Next time he comes, tell the maid to send him away directly!” Dereck snapped.

Stella said, “Okay, I will. But what about Jessi?“.

“Since she won’t come back or let you stay with her, we’ll do as before. You can visit her every other day, and I’ll ask others at the company to keep an eye on her,” Dereck sighed.

He had been tough all his life, but he softened only for Jessica.

Stella nodded. For now, that was the only option. They reached an agreement and finally slept peacefully.

The next morning, as Stella was considering visiting Jessica again over the weekend, she was told Brian had come again.

“Tell him to leave,” Dereck said bluntly.

“But Mr. Jacob Atkinson is also here,” the maid hesitated.

“He brought Jacob here?” Stella stood up abruptly.

Dereck frowned and thought for a moment. “I’ll go send him away.”

“Is that good?” Stella asked hesitantly.

“What else can we do? Jessi doesn’t want to see him.” Dereck knew his daughter well in this regard.

Stella sighed. “Fine, I’ll go with you.” Though she cared about Jacob, Jessica’s well–being was paramount.

Dereck and Stella went to the door together.

“Grandpa, Grandma, I missed you!” As soon as the door opened, Jacob stretched out his arms and rushed into their embrace.

“Jacob has grown taller,” Stella said, quickly bending down to hug him, her face bright with joy.

Jacob let her hold him but couldn’t help glancing past her. “Is Mom still sleeping? Grandma, can I go inside and wait for her?”

He looked at Stella hopefully, but she fell silent. When Jacob didn’t get a reply, the light in his eyes dimmed.

Brian stepped forward politely. “Jacob’s graduation ceremony is next week. He wants to invite Jessi. Please allow us to see her.” Then he bowed to them.

“Oh, you don’t have to,” Stella said quickly, motioning for Brian to stand up. Dereck didn’t move, but his expression softened slightly.

Dereck said, “It’s not that we want to stop you, but Jessi hasn’t been well recently and needs rest.” Though moved by Brian’s fatherly concern for Jacob, he still couldn’t let him see Jessica.

Brian said humbly, “it’s okay. We can wait in the car. If Jessi wakes up, please let us know.”

Stella refused firmly. “Oh, we don’t know when she’ll wake up. You should take Jacob home and come another day–”

Before she could finish, Jacob, taking advantage of his small size, squeezed between her and Dereck.

Stella gasped and turned to call out, “Jacob!”

Chapter 239

Dereck tried to chase after him but was blocked by Brian. “Jacob just misses his mom too much. Blame me if you must,” Brian said humbly, though his grip on Dereck was firm.

Dereck glared at Brian. “What’s the use of blaming you? Just come in if you want.” With that, he turned and walked away.

Jacob had already run up to the second floor. He burst into Jessica’s bedroom but found the bed neatly made, clearly unused for a long while.

“Mom?” He still held the doorknob, calling softly into the room.

When there was no reply, he shouted louder, “Mom, are you here?” Still no answer.

On the verge of tears, Jacob turned and ran to the other rooms on the second floor. “Mom, where are you? I really want to see you, Mom!”

Stella went upstairs and felt heartbroken seeing Jacob like this. “Alright, Jacob, stop shouting,” she said.

“Grandma, I can’t find Mom,” Jacob said through tears.

Stella sighed and hugged him tightly.

“Did I do something wrong to make Mom angry again? I can change! Please tell Mom I’ll fix it. Tell her not to disappear, okay? I miss her so much,” Jacob sobbed into Stella’s shoulder.

Stella patted his back gently, feeling both heartbroken and helpless.

Dereck, who had entered later, saw this and turned to glare at Brian. “Are you satisfied now?” Brian had tried to use Jacob to soften Jessica’s heart, but instead, he’d made the boy cry.

Brian looked at Jacob crying on the stairs, unflinching. “Jacob will learn the truth sooner or later. Hiding it from him will only hurt him more when he finds out,” he said, confident his son was stronger than he seemed.
