“Gabi, something happened with Jacob. I need to go take care of it.” Jessica stood up, grabbed her car keys, and headed out, too rushed to explain.
Then the desk phone rang, and Jessica picked it up without thinking. It was a call from the front desk receptionist. “Ms. Grant, there’s a little boy here who says he’s looking for you,” the receptionist said.
Jessica let out a breath all at once, like all her strength had just been drained. “Send him up,” she said quickly.
In this moment, Jessica realized that her concern for Jacob was instinctual. No matter how much she tried to let go emotionally, her instincts wouldn’t let her.
Soon, the receptionist brought Jacob up to Jessica’s office.
Jessica sighed, “If you wanted to see me, you could’ve just called.” Seeing Jacob, who looked like a miniature version of Brian, she spoke without thinking and then remembered she was the one who had refused to answer his calls.
Jessica thought he had come because he missed her. Her eyes welled up, and she stepped forward, wanting to hug him.
To her surprise, Jacob pushed her hands away. The eyes that looked so much like Brian’s weren’t filled with longing for her–they were filled with blame.
“I just came to see if you’re cheating with another man behind Dad’s back and mine,” Jacob said, the words cutting deep–shattering the maternal warmth Jessica had just started to feel.
Jessica let out a cold laugh, shook her head, and mocked herself for getting sentimental.
Jacob looked around Jessica’s office. There was only a stranger, Gabriela, inside. There was no other man. The place felt more like a small studio.
He thought to himself, ‘Mom’s not cheating with another man. So she just cares more about work than our family? Does she even have what it takes to work?’
“Why didn’t you come home and take care of me?” Jacob complained, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
He continued, “Why didn’t you cook for me? Why didn’t you come home and look after me when I was sick? Why didn’t you answer my calls? Are you really my mom who loves me more than anything?”
A string of accusations hit her. Jessica’s eyes turned slightly red, but she couldn’t even be bothered to explain. She decided to just call Brian and have him take Jacob away.
Jacob said, “Maddie took care of me at the hospital. When I wanted something to eat, she made it for me even when it burned her. When I was sick, she was the first one there for me. But what did you do?”
He then pointed at Jessica. “You don’t deserve to be my mom. I want Maddie to be my mom. I’m never calling you mom again.”
Her eyes were cold. “Gabi, I still have final revisions to do. Call Brian for me and tell him to come pick Jacob up. I don’t want him throwing
She held back the tears that threatened to fall and picked up her pen, ready to refine the design draft again. She had just made a few strokes when a small figure suddenly rushed toward her.
