Chapter 321
“I’m Wanda. Jessica, did you catch a cold?”
Wanda was sitting on the sofa at Atkinson Villa, calling Jessica, while Jacob crouched beside her feet, eavesdropping.
“No, I just haven’t had water for a while. My throat’s a bit hoarse. Don’t worry,” Jessica lied casually, wiping harder at the tears near her eyes.
She almost disliked herself for still failing to control her emotions after all this time.
“I see. How about you drink some water first, and we can talk later when you feel better?” Wanda said helplessly, her wrist tightly gripped by Jacob.
“Okay. Wanda, did you need something?” Jessica asked as she walked toward the water dispenser, marveling at Wanda’s thoughtfulness. She hoped one of the two babies in her belly would be a girl.
“Not really. I just wanted to ask if you’re free today. I want to treat you to lunch,” Wanda said sweetly.
Jessica checked the time–it was almost eleven. It was too late to go to the office now. “Sure. Where do you want to eat? My treat.” She wasn’t shameless enough to let a child use pocket money to treat her.
“I want to treat you. You can treat me next time–that’s called reciprocity,” Wanda said.
Jessica smiled when hearing Wanda say such a mature word. “You’re so young, but you already know about reciprocity?”
Wanda said seriously, “It has nothing to do with age. In relationships, people should give to each other. Only then can a relationship last. One–sided giving only hurts oneself while spoiling the other, which is stupid.”
Her words left Jessica utterly shocked. One–sided giving was indeed stupid, but it had taken Jessica ten years to realize that. A six–year–old understood this, while Brian had only gradually grasped it after their divorce.
Jessica thought they were all so stupid. Maybe they should never have met in the first place.
Looking at the water glass in her hand, she recalled her one–sided efforts in the past, which now seemed like nothing but self–indulgence.
Brian hadn’t been that bad at first. Though he lacked emotional intelligence, he was at least a normal person. When they first got together, he noticed her efforts and was considerate, but later, as she gave more, he was clearly spoiled by her.
At this thought, Jessica’s hand trembled. Just then, Wanda asked with concern, “Jessica, are you still there?”
Snapping back to reality, Jessica raised the cup and drained it.
Hearing the swallowing sound on the other end, Jacob breathed a sigh of relief. He’d been worried when Jessica suddenly fell silent, but she was just
drinking water.
Wanda wasn’t as optimistic. Jessica had been silent too long, and because she’d held the phone watch close to her ear, Wanda had clearly heard Jessica’s breathing grow heavier. Jessica must be feeling awful.
“Jessica, I changed my mind. I don’t want to eat out. Can I come to your place for lunch instead?”
The girl’s fickle thoughts pulled Jessica out of her negative spiral. She asked amusedly, “Why the sudden urge to come to my pl

She didn’t really find it strange–children’s thoughts were naturally changeable.
u just wanted to
When taking care of Jacob before, he’d have five or six ideas in one morning and often demanded they be fulfilled. Jessica could only try to reason with him, but it rarely worked. In the end, she had to balance his many whims.
Thinking of this, she suddenly remembered promising Jacob to make his summer plan, and her face turned pale. She’d decided to stay away from Brian

and Jacob, but she couldn’t seem to do it. Her fingers trembled uncontrollably.
Alone in the apartment, she thought she heard children’s shrill cries, a man’s impatient scolding, and praise for another woman.
She’d tried to change herself to gain their approval, only to be met with indifference and complaints, as if everything she did was wrong in that home
“I just suddenly want to see you. Jessica, are you home now? Let me have the driver take me over, okay?” Wanda asked sweetly, though her eyes were full of worry.
“Maybe next time,” Jessica said softly, which worried Wanda.
Even Jacob, slow as he was, sensed something was wrong with Jessica. He squeezed Wanda’s hand tightly in anxiety.
Wanda ignored him. “Oh, no, I already told my family I won’t be back for lunch. Jessica, if you don’t take me in, I’ll really be stuck on the streets.”
Hearing the little girl’s sobs over the phone, Jessica’s heart softened. “Alright, come over.”
