Brian watched Jessica head inside and close the door before returning to his place. When he opened the door, he found Jacob with red, puffy eyes
He quickly shut the door behind him and touched Jacob’s shoulders. “Hey, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
“Dad, did I mess up again?” Jacob’s voice caught in his throat.
Brian frowned. “Why would you ask that?”
“I saw you go out, and Mom wasn’t home either. I must have made Mom mad, so she decided to move out in the middle of the night, right? And then you found out and went after her.”
Brian’s mouth twitched. Jacob’s imagination was running wild. Finally, he couldn’t t
tal
it anymore, giving Jacob a light tap on the head.
“What are you talking about? Your mom’s fine. Why would she suddenly move out?” Brian was speechless about Jacob’s wild imagination.
But Jacob wasn’t buying it. “If she’s not moving out, what were you and Mom doing outside?”
Brian thought for a moment, then decided to tell the truth. “Jessi couldn’t sleep after what you said tonight, so she wanted fresh air. I didn’t want her to go out alone, so I went with her. Don’t overthink it.”
“Oh no, I made Mom lose sleep?” Jacob’s face went pale. “Dad, did I mess up?”
Brian gently pulled his anxious son into a tight hug, patting his back. “No, you just love Jessi too much. Don’t worry about it. Love is never wrong.”
Jacob curled up in his father’s arms, confusion flickering across his face. “Really? But Mom-”
“Really. If you don’t believe me, ask your mom tomorrow. She’d be distraught if you gave up because of this.” Brian’s voice was gentle.
Jacob slowly came around. “Okay, Dad, I get it. I won’t give up. Even if Mom won’t teach me, I can learn independently.”
Brian smiled with relief. He ruffled Jacob’s hair. “I’m glad you feel that way.”
Then he let go and gave Jacob a gentle push toward the bedroom. “Alright, it’s late. Go to bed. Tomorrow morning we’ll bring Jessi breakfast together.”
“Yeah!” Jacob nodded eagerly and started running back to his room, but halfway there, he
spun
around and ran back.
Brian was about to ask if there was anything else when Jacob suddenly wrapped his arms around him.
“Dad, you’re right. Love isn’t wrong, so I love you and Mom too.” Jacob stood on his tiptoes and kissed Brian’s cheek like Jessica used to kiss him.
After doing this, he stepped back shyly. “Good night, Dad.” He ran back to his room, but he didn’t look back this time.
Brian stood alone in the living room, touching the spot where Jacob had kissed him. His heart felt like it was soaking in warm water.
He whispered, “Jessi, how can you expect me to give up? With you and our child, I finally have a home.”
The next morning, Brian knocked on Jessica’s door again with Jacob, acting like nothing had happened.
Jessica was already awake. When she opened the door and saw Brian and Jacob, her eyes showed no surprise.
“Mom, breakfast.” Jacob held up the breakfast he was carrying.
Jessica took it and looked down at him. “I can teach you to draw.”
