Brian didn’t answer. He just reached over and gently ruffled Jacob’s hair. “Go to sleep now. When you wake up…”

But Jessica’s cold words echoed in his mind, and he left the rest unsaid. He helped Jacob take off his jacket and tucked him into bed.

It didn’t take too long for Jacob to fall asleep, though his sleep was restless.

Brian stood beside the bed and watched Jacob for a while, then he quietly stepped out and told Sylvie to keep an eye on Jacob.

After that, he grabbed his keys and drove straight to the office.

After Brian walked into the office, he went straight to Jackson and slapped a court summons onto his desk. “Hand this over to the legal team. Tell them to stall the court date however they can. Best to get the whole thing thrown out.”

Jackson froze upon hearing what Brian said. As a professional assistant, it wasn’t often that Jackson was caught off guard, but it really stunned him.

He thought, ‘Mrs. Atkinson is filing for divorce? Why? Jacob’s already six. What the hell happened?‘

A dozen questions zipped through his head, and then, Madeline’s face appeared in his mind..

Maybe Brian was too caught up in the situation to see through Madeline’s intention, but Jackson wasn’t.

He’d been watching from the sidelines for years. He remembered Madeline as just another junior clerk with nothing special, until Jessica started mentoring her personally. From there, it was like she’d been strapped to a rocket–her skills, her status, and everything shot up fast.

Then, Jessica stepped back to focus on family, and Madeline started mimicking how Jessica spoke, how she dressed, and even how she handled people. Bit by bit, she turned herself into a knockoff Jessica.

Next thing anyone knew, Madeline caught Brian’s eye and slid right into the role Jessica used to fill.

Jackson had always noticed the way Brian treated Madeline. There was definitely something between them, something a little too personal.

Jackson glanced at Brian, trying to say that maybe Brian got way too close to Madeline, but the words eventually stuck in his throat.

He wasn’t paid to comment on his boss’s private life. Brian was the CEO of a major corporation, and Jackson knew he was just Brian’s assistant.

Jackson was clear that whatever was going on between Brian and Madeline wasn’t his business.

“Understood. I’ll get this handled ASAP,” Jackson said crisply, keeping his tone strictly professional. He grabbed the summons and left to take care of it without another word.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Jessica was already bandaged up, with Gabriela by her side..

The scans showed no serious issues. Just some ruptured blood vessels, swelling, and a shallow cut where a piece of glass had broken the skin.

The doctor held up the scans and explained, “It’s nothing major, but we still recommend resting for a couple of days.”

“Got it, doctor. Thanks. We’ll stay,” Gabriela answered while helping Jessica to her feet. “Could you arrange a private room, please?”

But Gabriela knew that look in Jessica’s eyes. Without giving her the option to argue, Gabriela steered Jessica straight toward the VIP ward.
