Chapter 362
Chapter 362
Jacob looked at the closed door across the hall. Then he looked at Brian, who was staring out blankly, seemingly lost in thought. He couldn’t worriedly, “Dad‘ are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Come here. Tell me what your mom taught you.” Brian pulled his gaze away, took Jacob’s hand with one hand, and led him into the living
room.
Jacob saw that Brian didn’t look sad. He relaxed and happily started talking about what he’d learned from Jessica earlier.
Brian listened patiently and occasionally threw in a compliment. When Jacob finished, he asked, “Did your mom mention me?”
“Yes.” Jacob nodded hard. “Mom asked me to pass you a message.”
“What is it?” Brian leaned in, eager to know.
Jacob repeated Jessica’s words exactly as she’d said them. At the end, he couldn’t help his curiosity and asked, “Dad, what did Mom mean by that? What were you overthinking?”
He was really curious.
“Overthinking?” Brian murmured, looking down with an upset expression.
How he wished it really was just overthinking. But the fact that Jessica and that guy were getting closer and closer was undeniable. How could he not
care?
“I won’t ask. Dad, don’t be sad.” Jacob’s worried voice pulled Brian back to his senses.
Brian reached out and ruffled Jacob’s hair, speaking gently. “Don’t worry. I’m okay. Oh, next time you see your mom, tell her I got the message. I’ve got things to do. You go play for a bit.”
Brian sent Jacob off. Then he went into his study and contacted Jackson, telling him to speed up the investigation.
‘I have to find out who that guy really is,’ he thought.
Jessica had no idea what Brian was thinking. After having Jacob pass the message, she felt she’d handled things and put it out of her mind.
The next few days went as usual–work and then back home. When she wasn’t busy, she’d go to Wesley’s counseling office. Her days were fully scheduled.
Brian still brought her different kinds of food every day. Jessica was almost getting used to it, but she knew she shouldn’t.
The next time she saw Wesley, she talked about this inner conflict.
“There’s no ‘shouldn’t‘ about it. It’s just a matter of what you want, Ms. Grant. You really don’t need to be so hard on yourself,” Wesley advised gently.
Jessica looked down. “Is that really being hard on myself?”
“Yes,” Wesley said patiently. ‘Forcing yourself to turn down all of someone’s kindness is a kind of harshness. Ms. Grant, if you really can’t decide whether to accept his things, why not try starting as friends?
“Think about it. If a friend gave you these, would you stress over taking them or not? After all, they aren’t anything valuable
“But friends wouldn’t bring me things every day. And even if they did, I’d return the favor,” Jessica argued.
Wesley smiled, “See, that’s the problem. You’re afraid you can’t pay back the hidden favors, so you want to refuse from the start. But you can I help
