She cursed in her mind, “Damn it. Why did that bitch have to come back at this exact moment and ruin my plan?”
Though her heart burned with resentment, Madeline kept her expression entirely neutral, not daring to reveal the slightest hint of emotion on her face.
“Madeline.” Brian called out.
“Yeah” Started by Brian’s sudden call, Madeline nearly lost control of her expression.
He said. Thank you for everything tonight. I’ll give you triple overtime pay.”
“Oh, thank you, Mr. Atkinson.” Madeline understood that Brian was sending her away.
Madeline was reluctant to leave just right now. Triple pay was not what she wanted at all.
But she knew Brian very well. She immediately stood up and said goodbye to Jacob.
Right now, Jacob’s mind was entirely focused on Jessica. When he heard Madeline was leaving, he only replied, “Bye, Maddie.” He didn’t even try to persuade her to stay.
Madeline clenched her teeth in frustration.
Before leaving, Madeline said goodbye to Jessica and whispered in a voice only the two of them could hear, “Jessica, I thought you wouldn’t regret your decision. Well, you know, Brian really knows how to please a woman.”
Her remarks meant something intimate between Brian and her, yet Jessica’s cold eyes remained utterly indifferent.
Jessica knew Brian didn’t really cross the line with Madeline because if anything physical had truly happened between them, Madeline would be far more arrogant than this.
Yet even knowing that, Jessica’s resolve to go through with the divorce never wavered.
“Mommy, are you hungry? Dinner was all cooked by Maddie…” Jacob blurted out but soon covered his mouth with his hand…
He remembered Jessica didn’t like Madeline, so he looked at Jessica nervously.
“I’ve had dinner,” Jessica replied, her expression unchanged.
Her gaze met Brian’s across the room.
Sensing the tension, Sylvie said, “Mrs. Atkinson, I made the soups and dishes all according to your recipes. Why don’t you sit down and try them?”
Seeing Jessica unmoved, Sylvie continued, “When you were away, Mr. Jacob Atkinson didn’t have much appetite. I tried everything, but he hardly touched any of it. He just kept saying he missed you. In his heart, no one can ever take your place.”
*Sylvie, thank you for taking care of him,” Jessica cut Sylvie off before she could say more words.
Jessica gently pushed Jacob toward the table. “Eat your food first. We’ll talk later.”
Once they reached upstairs, Jacob immediately guided Jessica into his room, eager to show off. “Mommy, I cleaned up all these toys and blankets myself. I’m more independent now. When are you coming back?”
Jacob pursed his lips, and tears welled in his eyes.
Brian was about to speak when Jessica took out a card.
The numbers on it were slightly faded. It was the very bank card Brian had given her when they got married.
