“Shh, Jaka, don’t cry.” Stella’s voice tracked as tears welled up in her eyes, Seeing her grandson sobbing broke her heart.

Dereck came thundering down the stairs at the sound of the commation. “May, take Jaks to my room,” he neered, shooting Jessica a disapproving look. In his eyes, what was the big deal about letting the kid stay the night?

Jessica felt a bitter chill inside. She knew exactly what they were up to waiting for her to cave, just like old times.

Ever since he was a toddler, Jacob had used his tears as a weapon. If he didn’t get his way, he’d cry until she gave in.

His sobs racked his little body, and every time, Jessica’s heart melted. She just couldn’t help giving in. Once he cheered up, she’d wait for the right moment to gently point out where he’d gone wrong last time.

He’d sweet–talk her into forgiveness, only to run to Madeline and complain about his “mean” mom.

But those days were over. Jacob’s tears didn’t tug at

ther heartstrings anymore.

“Mommy, please,” he begged, his face red and snotty, “Hold me.” His voice was weak from crying, but Jessica kept a straight face and didn’t budge.

This was just another manipulation attempt. Jacob had been on his best behavior lately around his grandparents, trying to win her over. But his efforts were in vain, and now all his pent–up frustration was spilling out.

However, even with his grandparents pleading on his behalf, Jessica stood firm. She wasn’t going to give in this time.

Jessica shot a glare at Brian, who was just standing there watching. “What’s the deal? You gonna let your kid cry himself sick before you take him home?”

Brian didn’t say a word. He was waiting for her to crack and let Jacob stay the night. Once she gave an inch, they’d take a mile, making her back down further and further.
