Ernest just smiled. He was as tranquil and composed as a spiritual master, and as quiet as one could be.
He wasn't eating the peaches although he’d barely had anything for breakfast. Even after traversing along the mountain paths for hours, he didn't look tired at all. He did not even eat the peach, and he wasn't hungry.
How was he human?
"It's very sweet." Adrian also peeled a peach and took a bite. "It also has a hint of the taste of the sun."
"Right?" Leah glanced at Adrian and then at Ernest. "Ernest, are you not going to have one?"
"I'm not hungry," he said flatly.
Leah felt like she was about to collapse. She was eating a peach when her jaw dropped slightly in surprise. "Are you... you not hungry?"
Ernest nodded. "Yes, I'm not hungry."
"Are you human?" Leah really felt like she was about to collapse. They were both the same human species, yet why could Ernest feel fine without eating, while she felt like she was about to die?
Ernest frowned.
"Pfft!" The corner of Adrian's mouth twitched. "Do you even know what you're saying, Leah?"
"No." Leah hurriedly shook her head. "I'm not belittling him. I'm just saying, isn't he like some kind of superhuman?"
Adrian looked at Ernest and blinked. There was a mischievous look in his eyes. "Are you a superhuman if you don't eat anything?"
"One does not simply refuse food after walking for such a long distance. I'll call you Immorternest from now on," Leah said nonchalantly as she continued to eat the peache.
Adrian echoed her, "Immorternest, what a great name. As expected of an author, your imagination knows no bounds. Hey, Immorternest, what do you think of this nickname?"
That was the first time in his life that someone had given him such a nickname, and Ernest wasn't sure if he should laugh or cry about it. He wasn't mad about it, and he just beamed at Leah instead. His gaze was warm and gentle, and he had no objections towards it.
"You like it, don't you?" Leah met his gaze and said with a smile, "Immorternest, since you're not going to eat, may I trouble you with peeling three more peaches for me? I'm hungry."
After hearing that, Ernest smiled again and looked at Leah. He unexpectedly obliged. "Okay."
He gripped the knife, picked a peach, and started peeling it for Leah again without a single complaint.
Adrian jabbed him from beside him, "The contrast in your treatment is staggering, Immorternest. You're so gentle and caring towards Leah, but why are you so cold and ruthless to me?"
Ernest kept peeling the peaches without haste, turning the fruit around in his slender fingers until the flesh was bare of skin.
He discarded the leftover peach skin into a disposable bag, not letting a single peel drop to the floor.
Leah was astonished at his cleanliness. Meanwhile, she looked over to see Adrian aimlessly littering the peach skin on a rock, and couldn't help but to frown.
Ernest handed the second peach to Leah, then went over to tidy up the peels that Adrian threw on the rocks into the bag. He then took out some tissue to wipe his beautiful hands.
It was only then he glanced at Adrian and said bluntly, "Are you a pretty girl?"
Adrian was shocked and almost choked on his peach. "Don't you feel like you are going against your conscience when you stay stuff like that?"
"Nope." Ernest's tone was calm as ever. He glanced at Leah with his same gentle smile.
Leah's heart skipped a beat when she met his mesmerizing eyes.
She quickly turned her face away.
Ernest looked away from Leah and admonished Adrian, "If you want to eat another peach, throw the peeled skin into this bag until we find a trashcan down the road. Otherwise, you're not allowed to eat."
Adrian gazed at him and laughed, "Alright, I apologize for my negligence earlier."
With a soft smile, the corner of his mouth curved upwards, and his eyes glittered even brighter.
Leah nibbled on a peach and secretly peeked at him. He was really attractive. A smile was always plastered on his face, and he had those dark and glassy eyes that made people think of stars in the night sky, twinkling with brilliance.
Sigh.
It was so attractive.
He was her type, she liked people like that. Most of her male leads were like that, with dark glinting eyes, a tall figure, an air of chivalry, cold on the outside but caring on the inside, like a warm spring breeze.
Ernest was exactly the type that was like a warm spring breeze.
He was way too good-looking.
Particularly when he smiled, with the corners of his lips curled into a faint arc, it was sexy, beautiful, and incredibly alluring.
Perhaps Leah was too unambiguous when she sized hi up, she stared at him continuously, not letting him leave her line of sight. Ernest could easily notice her ogling.
When he turned his gaze back to Leah and saw how she'd only ate half a peach, it seemed like she wasn't as keen on eating as before, so he asked, "Are you stopping already? Didn't you say you'll eat three more?"
"Eek!"
Leah was shocked for a moment and started giggling. She blushed slightly and raised her voice imperceptibly to hide her embarrassment of being caught. "Yes, I'm still going to eat, please continue peeling."
Ernest smiled, still as gentle as he was before. "Okay."
As he spoke, he opened his mouth and took a bite. The juices that oozed from the peach were extraordinarily sweet, and in one bite his mouth burst with flavor.
Seeing him eat, Leah's smile grew even sweeter with excitement. "I made you eat it."
Ernest met her big excited eyes, filled with a sly gleam. He smiled softly and hummed in affirmation.
Then, he took another peach and peeled it for Leah.
All the while, Leah had been feeding him peaches without blinking, never diverging her interest for even a moment. He felt helpless under the gaze of a beautiful girl, and not exactly knowing why, but he almost cut his hand from distress.
Leah stared at Ernest leisurely, smiling as she watched him peel off the skin.
"Leah." Ernest had no choice but to remind her.
"Hmm?"
"Could you move back a little?" he asked.
It was because Leah was sitting too close to him.
Leah was stunned for a moment before she shook her head firmly. "That's not possible."
The corner of Ernest's mouth twitched. That girl was quite straightforward.
"I have to feed you peaches," she said.
Ernest looked askance at her with a calm expression, but he didn't look up at her again. Instead, he just continued to focus on peeling the peaches.
Leah had been staring at him the entire time. After he finished peeling, Leah asked, "Immorternest, is the girl in your heart beautiful?"
He almost cut his finger with the knife.
"Don't be so startled. Be careful." Leah alerted him with a smile. "There's no one else here but the both of us, so tell me! How does she look like?"
Leah had an indifferent and composed expression. However, she did not seem to realize if it was appropriate for her to ask such a private question.
Although Ernest was a collected person, he was a still little shocked at her display of bluntness. She was so frank that she caught others off guard easily.
Leah looked at him with a smile, as if she was asking a mundane question, but she knew in her heart that it was a rather apprehensive one.
"Why are you asking me this?" said Ernest.
